I successfully debadged my front grille

I was on the look out for a badgeless grille mount for my blob STI but couldn't find any so I thought I would have a go at debadging mine.

I noticed that the raised bit it the middle that holds the badge is hollow so I took a hot knife and cut it out. This left a raised bit at the top and bottom of the grille which I then sanded as flush as I could get it. The bottom is sanded pretty much smooth whilst the top isn't as flush but it doesnt need to be as you cant see that bit unless you go right up to the car and bend down to look up under.

The bottom bit couldnt be sanded completely flush as I seems the plastic is quite thin and in one part it look like it was gonna go through. But I got it down to about a tenth of a millimetre.

I keyed the whole grille mount with some wet and dry then gave it several coats of matt black.

It seems to have worked out well.

I'll post a pic later.

The very small mark in the second pic is where the plastic was starting to go through. I had to stop sanding at that point.

It looks quite flush in the pics.

Looks good! I'm new to the forum and just giving this a go on my 2003 STi, feel like I've been sanding for hours!

Good god, Tommy will come down hard on this guy, he'll feel like he's just watched Grotesque and A Serbian Film back to back.

Sarg400 07 October 2014 11:41 PM

Looks good will give mine go soon

LuckyWelshchap 08 October 2014 11:42 AM

Can I ask why anyone wants to do it ?

As a buyer I'd be cautious from the start.

jaygsi 08 October 2014 12:33 PM

If i ever get a Hawkeye i will be trying to remove the centre grill so its all one peice, doesn't look easy though

The front of the hawk comes apart quite easily if you know what you're doing! Doesn't take long at all to get the centre grill out.

Although personally I'm not sure about the badgeless grill look on a hawk. Looks good on the Blob, but not sure on the hawk.

you would have too smooth cutouts in the bonnet and bumper and cut out the slats and fit a one piece black mesh. Wonder if anyone has done it before

Totally agree with you and it doesn't look any better either. I don't get why people do things like this? Modding for the sake of it basically. :cuckoo:

If they came standard without the front badge, people would be putting it on.

It's like when I used to own an Astra VXR, people on the forums were putting on the corsa side light indicator extension things onto their Astra, but if they came standard with the extension thing, people would be taking them off! :cuckoo:

You guys clearly need to "de number plate mount" as well - or ... ya know, you could always put your number plate on it to cover it up?

Yeah I was going to do it next year when I was planning on spraying it white ,, but its getting traded in for a hatch this week I hope so it all starts over again very soon :D

Norman Dog 08 October 2014 08:26 PM

Looks good on the Blob, looks a bit 'empty' on the Hawk however. :)

some cars like the old vectra gsi look miles better with a debadged grill. i think scoobys look better with the badges however but its all down to taste. the way the numberplate is on the silver car does it no justice!
