apple are moving to AMD chips, certainly in iMacs

They won't be slower than the Intel i7s will they?

JackClark 23 July 2010 09:57 AM

I wouldn't be against it, I read that Intel were pissed off about the A4.

ChefDude 23 July 2010 10:26 AM

actually, i think the imminent refresh of iMac will just be to use i3/5/7

And the 920 is like over 2 years old and has been replaced by the later 8xx chips ;) plus its 6 cores v 4 cores, that makes it 50% slower to start with :lol1:

Yes i7-920 its 2 years old but 8xx chips use new socket uPGA-989 again new motherboard(and will be pricey),which its no out on market and shops.
Just compare motheboard for amd and i7 lga 1366,which is cheaper?

TonyBurns 23 July 2010 06:33 PM

Well the 8xx use the P55/Q57 chipset now, priced from about 75 quid, but I would go for the Intel over the AMD anyday, just a better chip (and more overclockable :D)
AMD need more cores to have the same advantage to the intel chips, and intel really are on top of the game just now, so you cannot really compare AMD's top end chips to anything but intels mid range chips if you want to be on par.

Tony:)

Hi Tony we are speaking about older type LGA1156,because nearly out its new socket for cpu(or if you like chipset µPGA-989).If you comparing i7-LGA1156 prices are fantastic, but don't support triple channel memory(for my its very important, due this i have LGA1366 + i7 920)etc.
Overclocking for most people its this taboo, but for my its biggest fun(yeah,Intel chips are better for overclocking:D)
