can't find files after windows 7 installed
 

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here...

Laptop was running Vista, windows 7 has been installed and now I cant find some files that were on an old user profile on vista. The profile doesnt exist in Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated as its photos of our daughter and the Mrs is very upset.

Have you checked in the c:\users folder for the profile you're looking for?

I can't see that a Windows 7 upgrade would delete any user profiles. I suppose your standard profile is still there with all your files?

I won't mention that it's not a great idea to keep treasured photos solely on one laptop in an old profile that could easily be stolen or suffer from a dead hard disk.

Its her laptop and I told her to back up the photos!!

The profile is not there when you look in C:\user accounts?
Nothing has been deleted from the hard drive so it must be there somewhere!

do you think voidtools (search software) is worth a go??

What about a c:\documents and settings folder? Do you have one of those?

I'd just do a search across the hard drive for *.jpg files. That's by far the most popular format. Otherwise *.jpeg, *.bmp or *.tif. Use the built-in search function.

Alternatively try a tool like Treesize (free for personal use). That will show you how big each folder on the hard drive is. It might be obvious from seeing that.
