***Subaru engine light flashing?***

hi all, i recently bought my first subaru:)on a 1999 plate. The thing is the engine light is flashing when the car move,s
this wasnt a problem until last week when the car wouldnt start one afternoon and i had my work mechanic out to have a look.
after looking into for around a hour it turned out to be the immobiliser (fuel pump) wasnt pumping,
after he got it working it was ok but the engine light is now flashing and the car doesnt seem to be running 100%
theres a loss of power.
can anybody help. thanks Paul

 Sounds to me like he's left the black 'read' connectors plugged together under the steering column, these are used to read the ecu fault codes and reset your ecu.

If the CEL is flashing with even pulses (no long pauses) it means your ecu is reset so all you need to do is disconnect the 2 small black plugs under the column and all should be fine.

For more info check out this link, it has pics of the connectors that should and shouldn't be connected.

Sounds like a good guess, altho it's not so much the black, as the green plugs that are significant here. Further to the above, check and see whether either the black and/or green plugs have been left connected.

If the green plugs have been left together on their own, your ECU will be in test mode - which will disable boost. If both black (as above) and green have been left on, the ECU is in reset mode and again, boost is disabled.

hi all, ive tryed it today and unplugged the green and black plugs but still the engine light comes up flashing....this time tho it flashes from when the key is turned where as before i only flashed when the car moved for couple of min.

Are you sure you've disconnected the correct black plugs? It sounds very much as though your ECU is still in read memory mode, so possible you've unplugged something else. One thing that's clear now given what you say about the flashing starting after a couple of minutes driving is that both black and green definitely were connected before.

Did your power come back after you disconnected the greens, btw?

yes the power did come back. what should i do next?
thanks

Are you sure the engine has an original factory ECU, that would be a good start given how often aftermarket ECUs flash the CEL for a variety of things depending on the brand of ECU.

not sure about the ECU, i think its got somthing to do we all the wirein under the dash, somebody as made a real mess under there.

sorted i unplugged the wrong black plug. after i unplugged the right one it was running like a dream (boost back the lot) no engine warning light flashing so very happy.
thanks alot splitpin a great help :-)
