Noise from Hawkeye STi when decellerating

Hi all,

I'm quite new here and have had my Spec D since April '10. I am completely new to the Subaru world and have a question regarding a noise my Spec D makes:

When decellerating, particularly in 2nd/3rd gear (just to clarify clutch out, in gear, no brakes) there is a noise and the only way I can describe it is like braking with really worn pads, almost like a rubbing/grating noise. The car has done 63k, full Subaru history and been well looked after with no modifications. What I'm after is whether this is completely normal? I have never had a Subaru before or a 4wd car so am not sure if this is something that needs looking at or a trait of the car.

Thanks in advance. I have tried searching the boards but nothing answers my question.

What clutch/flywheel is in there at the moment? Is it std or uprated?

bluesntwos1 04 July 2010 09:00 PM

As far as I'm aware it will be factory standard.

Is it worse when letting go of the accelerator form higher revs & is the sound more of a vibration or a sound (e.g screeching)?

bluesntwos1 04 July 2010 09:07 PM

It seems to be more noticeable at lower speeds (maybe the engine noise drowns it out at higher speeds?) There doesn't appear to be any vibration at all, just a noise which I can only liken to braking on really worn pads.

I have an 06 Hawkeye WRX, I experience the same thing, but mainly in 5th gear. My car has covered 45k and I've put this noise down to gearbox wear/gearbox on the way out. I have a 50 mile cross country commute at 2am or 4 am, 5 or 6 days a week and I really drive the car hard.

By the way, the noise disappears if you dip the clutch when decellerating (leaving it in gear).

hawkeye_WRX 04 July 2010 09:10 PM

and BTW, I might be experiencing the noise in other gears but the exhaust (3" straight through) might be drowning it out

there was a post about this on nasioc, (like a noisy bearing kinda sound on overun), i get this in 2nd on my '07 wrx, i tried one of their tips which was front tyres 4psi more than rears, (35f, 31r in my case) and this signifcantly reduced it, although did not eliminate it. So it must be a diff issue. I'll see if i can find the link.

Thanks mate, yeah could sound like a noisy bearing I guess. Definitely sounds 'mechanical!'

Good description! Yep, the noise I get sounds like a noisy bearing! :luxhello: Lol

Wasn't planning on doing anything about it apart from keeping the car well serviced. I'll worry about it when the gearbox drops out...

I figured I can't possibly drive the car as hard as I do and not expect mechincal noises/failures :lol1:

Exhaust touching prop shaft?

Since when has an unmoddified car had a 3" straight though exhaust? Hope its been remappped for that.

What are you on about? Who said my car was unmodified? Exhaust touchinmg propshaft? Are you even replying to the correct thread? If you were, yes the car was mapped by Duncan within 24 hours of fitting the decat system...

Sounds like transmission noise, if you engage the clutch and it goes, it could also be a noisy clutch release bearing, so if in doubt, take it to a dealer/speciallist ;)

Tony:)

the bearing's in the rear of the gearbox are prone to breaking up thus creating the noise your experiencing.. get it to your dealer or specialist for them to remove the rear of the box and change them

23 seconds on...mine was silent until uprated clutch and lightweight flywheel. Yours could well be standard but these noises are common to a greater or lesser extent in subarus and mostly noticed when lightening the flywheel.:)

I'm replying to the OP, not you.....
You appear to have a different problem, but I'm starting with the easier things to rule out for the OP.
Unfortunately I've mixed the two of you together - not paying attention late on Sunday night and all that.

Because you mentioned 3" exhaust that suggested you were talking to me :thumb: Getting confused late at night happens to the best of us

No, it doesn't sound as bad as that. I have a letter from the previous owner to say it hasn't had anything replaced apart from two rear shocks at the 10k service. Will get it to a specialist and let them have a listen.

53 06 July 2010 04:19 PM

Don't spend too much time and money hunting down transmission noises...If it's well serviced and not broken or getting worse I'd wait till you replace things like the clutch and flywheel.

bluesntwos1 06 July 2010 07:56 PM

Yeah I was thinking that but I have 1 years Subaru warranty so want to make sure it is spot on before that runs out. Wouldn't want something to break when it runs out that could have been fixed during the warranty.

LeeP 06 July 2010 08:25 PM

What speed does it come in at? And is the noise varying in loudness, high pitched screeching (only just audible?)

rob84 06 July 2010 10:11 PM

Like I said in the post above.... Hawkeyes are prone to bearing's in the rear of the extension piece in the gearbox breaking up. it will get worse I assure you. I've changed loads of these just recently
