Broken Diff??
 

Hi people,

Just after some advice if anyone can help.

My 2003 WRX has developed quite a loud, high-pitched whine when i left off the throttle and allow to coast from about 70MPH down to 60MPH at which point it seems to stop.

When it first occurred on the motorway, i pulled into the services and had a good look around but couldn't find anything obviously wrong, however, when on full lock, it did judder slightly.

I was advised it could be a broken diff or at least one that's on it's way out, however, was also advised to drop and change the gear and diff oil which seems to have almost eradicated the problem.

I've since been told it could just be the diff bearings, but either way, it's much better than it was.

Can anyone offer any practical advise before i shell out money on parts that may not even need changing??

Sounds iffy mate. I would look at replacing the diff. It isn't too big a job. Have a look at this item number on a well known auction site; 220623997715.

Ive not looked atthe diff above but remember it needs to match the front...

Appreciate the replies so far.

I have been looking on a well known auction site for the part required but I'm not 100% sure which part would be the right one.

I was informed by a garage that it is the centre diff that needs replacing - however, the part advised above is a rear differential??

Just wondered if anyone could advise what the difference would be between a broken centre diff or a broken rear diff - any help would be greatly appreciated - I just dont fancy shelling out for a rear diff if the problem persists and i eventually need a new centre diff anyway!
