engine replacement options..
 

hi all.. i have a 96 sti which has developed and internal clicking as a result of running too rich over the last 10 weeks or so.. and looks like a replacement/rebuild will be required :(

just also purchased FMIC and apexi power fc

been looking at the various options and have briefly spoken to alan at enginetuner earlier today but didnt have time to query all of the following:

as far as i can see i have a few options:

1. Get current block checked and change what is knackered (suspect seals/cylinders) just wondering what the likely costs involved will be for parts labour? as i cant do this myself

2. Sell current block and invest in a rebuilt closed deck or semi closed deck block.. again not sure of costs..??

3. as i am planning on getting the apexi installed with 440ccs i could go for 2.1 stroker kit - i want as much power as i can ideally without having to also buy a new turbo.. (currently standard turbo for 96sti also with standard clutch - not sure if organic - and standard box, all in perfect working order - at least at present!!) how much power would i be able to get??

I cant really afford the stroker kit but will stick it on a credit card for the time being if the other options are not drastically cheaper

alright fella i think u should think about about a uprated fuel pump as well just so u keep enough fuel there for the injectors but i would have thought 340 is where youll end up which will be pretty potent on the road:D

yep already got an uprated walboro on there.. so if i wanted to get to 370-400bhp with the 2.1 stroker kit what would be the limiting factors?? I thought the standard turbo could handle a bit more than 340??

what turbo u running mate ihi or tdo5h?

its a tdo5 turbo mate

the tdo5 isnt efficent enough to go over 330/340 unless supported by some serious mods mate

yeah so if i get the stroker kit with forged goodies will this allow for more? what size injectors would you need to get to the higher 300's? or what would you advise would be the next step?

id go with 550 cc and apexi avc-r boost controller and you would probably c what your after.

was planning on going with a perrin 3 port bcs.. would an ebc have any benefit in terms of more boost? i have read many mixed opinions of boost controllers on here

hi mate just want to say if your intending on going over 300bhp your standard box will go so expect to fork out for a new 1, also your looking at around 3k to 3.5k for a worthwhile standard rebuild which will be capable of around 350bhp (not sure on stroker kit prices) and as said above your turbo limits you to aroung 340bhp so also allow for a decent turbo say around £800 to £900

Depending on your final goal you could go STI 2.5 the short blocks new are around £1.4K in fact Scoobmania (Area 51) do a drive in drive out 2.5 for around £2.5k.

Hi bluebugeye how's the interior? Anyway whichever avenue you take it's not gonna be a cheap 1 (if it is it won't last long) speak to Dave at api and he'll tell you what your options are or find a Scooby specialist local to you and see what they say. Hope this helps mate

1. Get the initial fault diagnosed by taking the car to a speciallist/dealer, a clicking noise can be anything from the boost solenoid to a dodgy injector.
2. The more power you want, the more expensive it will become due to the simple fact that parts like the clutch, gearbox and brakes wont be able to do their job (either by breaking or overheating, just add about 7k to replace these item and ancillaries)
Your TD05 will be good for about 350bhp, lots of people see this sort of power from this turbo on classics, though as above, the more power you push, the less reliablethe car will become.
