Engine Rebuild
 

If I was to purchase a built bottom end for my car from one place an have somebody else fit it to the rest of the engine would this be an issue?
I was under the impression it would have gone straight on so can anyone put me straight on this?
Is it likely to open a can of worms down the line?

As always any sound advice is greatfully recieved due to my lack of internet searching time.

You mean buy a newly built one? If so, then potentially you might have a few problems if someone supplies and someone else fits if it ****s itself within the warranty period. otherwise i can't see a problem?

Aye newly built Tathan I'v had mixed opinions from garages but think they are maybe just after a few extra quid. Surely if it's a CDB forged bottom end if anything is going to pile in then it'll be heads or something?
Just after a bit of knowledge to help me decide whether to just bite the bullet pay the bit extra have the full engine built by the one guy then the place that has the car can just drop it back in for me.

Has your current engine had a bearing failure? If so you will need to have the heads stripped & cleaned to get the swarf out, otherwise I can't see it being a big issue.

It shouldn't be an issue, engine wise, so long as the existing bits have been cleaned up properly.
BUT: think of it this way: IF something goes wrong and you have TWO people involved, the short engine builder and the engine fitter/setter-upper, who takes responsibility?

If it were me, I'd have it done by ONE place.

When mine went, I was lucky enough to drop on a brand new, still in it's packing case, 2.5 litre STi short engine, which I bought cheap.

My repairer was then able to rebuild it for me with decent pistons and rods, plus ACL race bearings, and build the other bits back onto it. All done by one guy, no probs if there IS a prob, if you see what I mean.

Yeah I hear what your all saying the saving is about £800ish but may aswell just spend the extra to be sure an stop being a tight ass as if I don't then theres maybe scope for it to cost alot more

Can I ask HOW you intended saving that much? Local garage?

Well it'll be £250 for delivery down and back to the place that build it so really a saving of £550 but yeah a local garage the guy rallies subarus an has done for sometime so knows his stuff though

I'm going a similar route with having one guy do the build another the fitting however I'm having a long engine built so there is no debate over the responsibility of the different parties. How about sending your heads to be re-furbished and fitted by your engine builder and get the engine back with the Cam belt etc. fitted?

Aye bugeyes thats the plan now hence me saying need to stop being a tight ass was just thinking about saving a few quid to put towards other parts

I'm paying £100 to have the engine removed (I've done a lot of the stripping down but got stuck at the downpipe/up-pipe as I can't get the car high enough) and around £250 for the refitting of the new engine.
