fitting aircon into late classic advice???

hi people im half way through fitting aircon to my99 uk and ive done all bits under the bonnet all i need to do now is change the matrix under the dash now originally i was told this was a complete dash out job but was then told by a guy on here you dont need to remove the dash atall could some1 please help me as its really hot and i want to use my new aircon :norty:
any help is appreciated thanks .taylor

You shouldnt need to replace the heater matrix, unless its failed, you have to fit the new a/c rad, double fan unit and the centre console and pipework, afaik that is all that is involved before having her gassed up, took them about 5 hours to fit mine to my new MY00 back in 2000, a dash out job would take that on its own.

Tony:)

I have to change the box with the aircon matrix inside (under the airbag on the passenger side behind the glovebox) and I keep getting mixed responses as to whether or not to take the dash out or not???

TonyBurns 01 July 2010 03:27 PM

Its a dash out job, no other way of getting to it, they never did that to my MY00 though, no difference in the car between the 99 and 00 mechanically.

Tony:)

PS, when you say the aircon matrix, what exactly are you saying? the aircon has its own rad that goes infront of the normal rad, the matrix your talking about is a heater matrix, nothing to do with the aircon.

I did this conversion on my 98 Impreza, there is no need to take the dash out, just remove the glove box.

@ Tony, he means the evaporator that sits behind the glove box.

Let me know how you get on with this Taylor , as was thinking of doing the same to my 2000 wagon .

cheers Dan

T4YLOR 83 01 July 2010 04:15 PM

will do prelude lol

Lee_1075 01 July 2010 04:21 PM

Open the glove box and you should see that it is held in by four or five screws if i remember right, you need to remove it first as the evaporator sits directly behind it.

T4YLOR 83 01 July 2010 04:24 PM

yes ive got that far but i mean the box that the evaporator is in (the 1 with the fan motor on it) does that come out or can you get the evaporator out?

Taylor What parts will i need to collect mate ?. I have found a guy selling the bits out of a p1 but he is in glasgow and that is a tad far for me .

Cheers

Dan

You will need to swap the whole unit over, don't open is up!! your one is for a non A/C car only.

Yes he did send me the instructions - he was very helpful indeed.

From what I remember, the evaporator fits to the original heater box etc.

I've not fully installed mine yet - i've had the engine bay part done but waiting on some parts to finish off the installation (i've got a local scooby specialist doing it - taken 90 mins so far).

i got my kit from grade a subaru and i did not have to take my dash out its quite easy once you see how there is 1 bolt up behind the dash and you can take it off with the dash in its just hard to put back in
