Blu-ray, rubbish!

As I work in a shop selling AV equipment, I have noticed a trend of blu-ray players being pretty crap and very selective of what they will play. Now that I have decided to go blu and bought quite a good machine, I'm just realising how **** and unreliable a format it actually is.

Anyone else had issues?

My own thoughts on the matter is that cheaper players and the ps3 seem to more stable.

Bring back HD-DVD all is forgiven!

Ant 27 June 2010 12:38 AM

I have the Sony s350 had it since release and it's been flawless.

SPEN555 27 June 2010 12:48 AM

I have a PS3 and it's been fine.

tathan 27 June 2010 12:53 AM

I've never used a bluray player other than a PS3 (I've got one and everyone I know that has bluray uses their PS3 too) so I'd like to ask is it true that players typically take 1-2mins to start a disc???

As above, my PS3 has never set a foot wrong and plays everything - the only issue I have with it is the fact it uses something like 300w to play a furking disc.

Paulo P 27 June 2010 01:54 AM

My PS3 is also fine and to be honest it's all I use it for because I'm still waiting for GT5 to be released

my mate has a sony blu ray player, said it's the best one he has got feck knows what sony model number.I have never really taken to blu ray myself, you pay over the price for discs and i am quite happy with HD.I think 3D tv won't be as popular either, having to wear special glasses just to watch a movie,I could see 3D internet porn taking off though :D lol

Dingdongler 27 June 2010 08:20 AM

Nope. Had my BDP about 2 years now and its NEVER not played a disc. It is quite slow to execute some commands but I was warned of that before I bought.

EddScott 27 June 2010 09:43 AM

Never had a problem with blurays.

Had a PS3 but sold it when I bought a bluray drive for my PC. I found it very clumsy to play blurays on the PC so bought a Panasonic BD60.

I believe the BD60 looks better than the PC and the PC looked better than the PS3 - all playing the fight scene in Transformers on the freeway.

As for HD Vs SD some films look immense whereas others (older) tend not to look much different.

J4CKO 27 June 2010 09:48 AM

I really cant be arse with Blu-Ray, ok it looks nice and shiny but I was kind of happy with dvd and the shininess still cant overcome the fact I have to fanny about with disks, the media box thingy is much more convenient, it was at least, until my 11 yr old said, "Dad, what dies format do, is it bad....."

The PS3 is used specifically for keeping dust off the tv stand.

gallois 27 June 2010 09:49 AM

i have a sony bdp-s300 which is quite old now, bought Avatar which wouldn't play, i had to faff around downloading an update, writing it to disc, then playing it in the bluray to update the firmware.

Blitz Boy 27 June 2010 09:54 AM

i fix flat screen tv's for a living and we get blue ray players back all the time! absolute nightmare to fix and not get them sent back in. good pic quality just shame about the making of them.

Westwood2006 27 June 2010 10:34 AM

As usual Sony release a great format / hardware combination and fcuk it up with crap software!

I use PS3 and usually plays everything I put in it .... after downloading updates!

This is my main issue; whatever person in design and test lab who thought that a 30+second boot-up time to play was acceptable should have been hung.

That's my biggest gripe. When I put a disc in, I want to to play now, not have it faff round for a minute then get another minute of splash screen before I can even get to a menu.

That and poor quality conversions of older films (Black Rain for example, so grainy I may as well watch it on VHS)

ahar 27 June 2010 11:23 AM

Had no problems with the PS3 - I've read they'll be releasing an update so it will do 3D in the future. Not that I'm going to bother with a 3D TV for some time though...

clark822 27 June 2010 11:26 AM

Remember when dvd started to catch on there was loads of players/disks that would not work due to there not being a standard point for the laser to start at on the disk .
Some would read from the edge of the disk whilst overs would start a fraction from the edge if that makes sense

wayner845 27 June 2010 12:01 PM

My ps3 is plugged into a good amp with mega surround and a 42" full hdtv and its superb.I wouldnt contemplate a stand alone Blue Ray player.

:lol1: does it go to 11 though?

I was picky with my PS3 it wouldn't output DTS-HD Direct and i wanted my amp to have the fancy DTS-HD light come on so bought a standalone unit and flogged the ps3 :lol1:

I have just joined the rest of the civilised world and bought a Philips Blu-Ray player. Some discs need firmware updates, but they all still play, and there doesnt seem to be too much waiting round for the film to start.

Jamz3k 27 June 2010 01:50 PM

Well my advice is not to buy Pioneer or Sharp Bluray players as they seem to be the most troublesome. I'm going to see if I can sort mine out today as it wouldn't play after the first hour of No Country For Old Men, if it can't be sorted its going back for a Sony unit which seem to be the least troublesome.

I would generally rent about 5 movies a week and I can be guaranteed to have problems with at least one of them! Not on imo

Have you seen the photos they have been releasing, it looks like it might actually be worth the wait :thumb: I was chatting to Swiss about this yesterday and he couldn't see how it be better graphically than Forza, we are both playing Forza until it comes out.

tathan 27 June 2010 03:07 PM

Haven't you seen the trailer they released a couple of weeks back?

Only time I had a disc not play was a DVD of Three Kings. Had a big argument in Currys over it too.

So the moral of this thread is..

The thread starter is a troll who (though he works is av) know nothing, and his life hasn't turned out quite the way he wished. You really should have worked alittle harder in school (on the basis he even went).

Oh and his from Northern Ireland to

Are you sure it isn't you that didn't go to school?
