Whats my options?

Hi, I have a MY00 classic UK impreza turbo. I have just put it in my local garage to have the head gasket done, and they have got back to me, and said that it is all corroded, and I need a new block and cylinder heads.
I don't really want to buy off ebay!!, so what are my options?

Where is the best place to go to get it repaired, with the work that is needed, and how much do you think I am looking at?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

cant they skim the block and heads?

every1sgottablue1 22 June 2010 12:28 PM

Apparently not the corrosion is to bad :(

oh dear. you want to reuse as much as you can? or do you want a whole new bottom end and heads?

cheapest option is a like for like replacement engine, but you have no provenance with them and could end up buying a lemon.

you might be able to get a second hand block and reuse your crank, rods and pistons, but you will need new bearings (I wouldnt recommend it though). you might be able to get hold of a pair of cylinder heads but you will need new gaskets to get correct compression etc.

other options is a drive in, drive out engine like enginetuners 2.1 stroker. david at api also offers this service but you are looking at about £3k approx including labour for either PM Alan Jeffery or David at API as they will be able to advise you better than I can.

Thanks mate :)

I'd speak to one of the above as well... if you're needing more than a motor factor can supply a non-specialist garage is gonna get very expensive, very quickly.

I would bite the bullet and buy a new engine from ebay and get that fitted mate, if you search through a couple you will find a genuine seller or scrapyard/ breakers that will give you a warrenty with one mate, much cheaper than what you will be getting charged i would of thought bud.

ebay engine from a dodgy sounding bloke you've never met in bradford who keeps saying "innit" and calling me "bruv" and doesn't know the difference between an STI and WRX, or an API rebuild for less....

Tricky :freak3:

:) No contest!

If i was to buy a complete engine, what would my options be if I kept the UK 5 speed gearbox. Was thinking of going down the STI engine route.
What model/year would be a direct fit to my car.....newer the better really! ;)

Just buying and fittting an STI engine won't make any difference as you'll need the turbo and ecu to make it work.

The STi engine is a better spec but unless you have the external stuff to run it there will be no benefit.

So on top of buying an engine you'll needa trubo and some way of remapping the car.

It'll be easier to up the spec [ and possibly cheaper or no dearer ] of the engine you have a bit and then buy a turbo and ecu.

Good Luck David

Thanks David, have been down to take a look this morning, and the engine is all out. They have only taken one cylinder head off, and here is a couple of pics:

Looks FUBAR'ed to me. Would like your opinion if you can do anything with it David? Cylinder head has a little nick out of it aswell but no where near as bad as the block.

WOW, If ever there was a picture required for what happens when a car is kept without inhibitor in the coolant That is it. I've never seen anything like that on a Subaru.

Even so, we have spare blocks here and I can still offer a decent solution that will not break the bank. With a guarantee of course.

David

OK David I will give you a ring ;)

Cor that is truely fooked!

I think the rebuild with API + up the spec of the internals so that should you want to run much more power down the line then you got that option?
