1999 CLASSIC PETROL FLAP RELEASE ISSUE...!?!

My petrol flap doesn't engage with the little white release rod when you close the flap shut. :(

It looks like the rod isn't protruding enough, so doesn't actually meet up with the flap's locking tang. Is there any way of fixing it? :wonder:

The Rig 20 June 2010 09:02 PM

with the petrol flap open, try the cable a few times manually, via the tag from inside the car, get some pliers on the white tang and try nd pull it out a bit or manipulate the petrol flaps tang over a bit to grip onto the white spring bit

joz8968 20 June 2010 09:08 PM

Sure. I'll try all that tomorrow...

Cheers.

joz8968 20 June 2010 09:12 PM

I just have a white cylindrical bit, about 10mm long that protrudes out from the black cable. Is this normal? Is this the movable "rod" (that engages with the flap tang's hole), or should there be something else attached to its end, that's missing?

The Rig 21 June 2010 12:22 AM

nope,thats all ya get !

A Guinea pig`s nipple as i call it

joz8968 21 June 2010 02:15 PM

Hoot!

The nipple moves in and out on the in-car lever fine - just don't engage. If I bend the tang towards it a bit, the flap won't shut flush and engage. :(

Looks like I'm gonna have to bend that tang around so that it creates a curved corner, so as to smoothly engage with the nipple and push it back in, before springing back out again and engaging into the tang's hole...

The Rig 21 June 2010 05:51 PM

hmmm, weird, for it to just happen ?

joz8968 21 June 2010 10:31 PM

lol, no Rig, it's my new car!

I replaced the old 93 WRX with a white STi 5 - and very nice she is too... Apart, that is, from the flap release (oo-er).

The Rig 21 June 2010 11:31 PM

Ah right.

Fair play on the upgrade :-)

Maybe the white part that the cable operates that goes into the tang has been shortened, slightly broke at some point maybe ??

joz8968 22 June 2010 10:26 AM

I'll take a photo for you to see. (I can't compare, because my old car's one worked fine, so I didn't bother checking the mechanism out)...

joz8968 28 June 2010 02:13 PM

Rig - or anyone - can you help?:-

Went to see Olly at RCM and he looked at it and said there's a spring missing(?). Now I don't know how the mechanism works as such, so do you know what he's on about/how this spring fits with the rest of the mechanism, etc.?

alcazar 28 June 2010 02:57 PM

Missing? As in removed? How difficult is it to get in bits? Breakers would have a spring, or maybe dealer for pennies if you can get it into bits.

joz8968 28 June 2010 03:07 PM

Either removed - but more likely fallen off :wonder:

I'm sure getting it back together with a new spring, etc. ain't a problem. ;)

MY problem is that I don't know how/where the spring fits. I need it to be explained to me, etc...

The Rig 28 June 2010 03:30 PM

thing is, even if a spring were missing, can you pull the white tab out further than it currently is (as if a spring were behind it ?)

if not, im doubting thats the problem, but starnger things do happen, just seems weird a person would remove such a thing ??

joz8968 28 June 2010 03:36 PM

That white nipple is defo spring loaded. It flies back out under tension, when you let go (obviously after first pushing it in). It defo works via the in-car lever too.

Is there supposed to be another spring (based on what Olly said), then? :wonder:

The Rig 28 June 2010 03:40 PM

Pic of my Tang,oo eer

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...to-0001-28.jpg

pic of my flap,oo err some more

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...to-0002-23.jpg

is yours similair ?

there is a spring behind the white tang in pic 1,but very bizarre scenario for someone to remove it ,but not unlikely i guess

joz8968 28 June 2010 03:46 PM

Ahhh, "spring behind white tang". Now I'm getting somewhere - this must be what's missing!

Can you get a camera phone in behind the tang to take a photo of how that spring attaches to the tang and flap etc.?

(Nipple is the same :thumb:)

The Rig 28 June 2010 04:25 PM

nah,to get behind it id have to remove alot of bits

if that white tang springs back out when you push it in with your finger, thats how mine works

joz8968 28 June 2010 04:48 PM

Right, looks like I have a different (wrong!), unhinged (how apt! ;)) tang to my flap!:-

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...etrolflap1.jpg

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...etrolflap2.jpg

This is obviously why I can't get the nipple to recede - as I haven't got the spring-loaded, hinged tang to my particular flap! Therefore looks like the wrong type of flap is fitted! But How come though?!

The Rig 28 June 2010 04:55 PM

yup,that`ll be your problem !

it needs to have the curve as on mine to push the white tang back when you push the fuel flap in

but as you say, how come, surely all classic fuel flaps are the same, guess not ??!?!?

at least we got there in the end ha ha !!

joz8968 28 June 2010 05:01 PM

So it looks like it's eBay time! (I'll have to to politely ask the seller to show me a pic of the lever mechanism...........) ;)

Cheers Rig - thanks for investing time in this. I would have posted a pic earlier on, but at the time didn't realise the mechanism COULD differ!

Nice one :thumb:

The Rig 28 June 2010 05:34 PM

no problems

good luck !

Rick2017 14 May 2018 07:38 AM

So should the petrol flap have a spring?.Does anyone have a picture of where it lives please mine is doing the same thing

joz8968 14 May 2018 09:55 AM

There's a module that fits onto the fuel door's metal tang. It's a light grey plastic thing with a metal spring thing.

It's a OEM part from Subaru.

Rick2017 14 May 2018 09:58 AM

Have you got a picture of yours please

joz8968 14 May 2018 11:42 AM

ICP may have it. I ordered mine from Unity (Subaru) Leicester.

Rick2017 14 May 2018 12:49 PM

Is that all it is that's causing all the bother:lol1:

joz8968 14 May 2018 02:16 PM

Totally!

But like you, because it wasn't there, how were we to know!

It was only after a while, that I actually found out about that extra part of the fuel door set-up! :wall:

Rick2017 14 May 2018 04:06 PM

****e isn't it. I'm going round replacing everything
