How do they callibrate SPECS?

On the Cat & fiddle ( famous road if you are a biker ) they have now installed specs, with a 50 limit.

Anyone that knows the road will know that you will have to be giving it some beans ( on certain stretches ) to average 50 mph between the cameras.

How do they set these up? Do the rozzers time themselves in cars, or is it done with some kind of measuring device between cameras?

tathan 18 June 2010 10:09 PM

They know how far apart the cameras are :wonder:

Brun 18 June 2010 10:10 PM

Google is your friend....

tathan 18 June 2010 10:13 PM

But if you're asking because you're a biker, I though SPECS got your front plate?

mj 18 June 2010 10:16 PM

I'd last a week on a motorbike.

Point is, this road in question is so twisty, you can'd do 50 round some parts, so to avarage 50, you have to gun it in other areas....thusly breaking the 50 limit...

I will have a google..

tathan 18 June 2010 10:32 PM

I know the road, and am surprised they'd rely on SPECS for it - they must be targetting utter nutters because it only works by average speed between two known points.

mj 18 June 2010 10:38 PM

That's my point...

On the C&F, you would have to have a nice brisk drive to average 50 between any of the 2 cameras.

The question, is how do they guage this, and setup and decide the thresholds for the times they would deem as speeding?

tathan 18 June 2010 10:44 PM

speed = distance / time

mj 18 June 2010 10:49 PM

<bangs head on desk>

tathan, I fully understand the 2nd year infant school mathematics. WHAT I AM SAYING IS, IS THAT ON A ROAD LIKE THE CAT AND FIDDLE, TO ACCHIEVE AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 50 BETWEEN 2 FIXED POINTS, THE DRIVER WILL HAVE TO DRIVE FAR IN EXCESS OF 50 AT CERTAIN POINTS. IS THIS HOW THE CAMERAS ARE SET UP IN THE REAL WORLD?

I.E, DOES A COPPER GUN IT BETWEEN 2 FIXED POINTS UNTIL HIS TRIP COMPUTER READS AN AVERAGE OF 50, THEN THEY CALL THAT THE 'TIME'???

christ on a motorbike.

This and a clock.

Kuohu 18 June 2010 10:52 PM

And relax.

tathan 18 June 2010 10:54 PM

I know that's what you're saying. However, if they set an arbitary average speed of 40mph along there, and you went along there in an Arial Atom at EXACTLY 45mph and never deviated (feasible) then you'd get done. Therefore, I don't see how they could prosecute any average speed below 50mph. So, they must be set for 50mph.

mj 18 June 2010 11:02 PM

Yes, and what I am asking from anybody that actually knows, is how do they set the time?, because it is the time that triggers an offence or not.

By measurement, or by driving between the points?

My whole point, is that by driving there are parts where you will be doing 70, to acchieve the average of 50, which makes the whole system flawed IMO.

robby 18 June 2010 11:11 PM

According to MCN the system is flawed as there are shortcuts which the cameras don't take into account.
If you take a shortcut the cameras don't know so when you get to the next camera it thinks you've been speeding to get there so quick.
The specs have been brought in for the summer to catch bikers which mean they're rear facing :(

Well if you want somebody "that actually knows" I suggest you obtain legal advice :freak3:

For everyone else, the cameras measure average speed. Your average speed MUST be over the speed limit for a conviction to be obtained. It's presumably to stop the total loons who do 3 figure speeds along there.

Jesus...

mj 18 June 2010 11:22 PM

Do they though? I'm not sure, because in the case of a twisty road, allowing an average of 50, means a real 70 in places. Surely the law would not miss that one?

SPECS seem great for motorways, but a bit hit and miss elsewhere.

tathan 18 June 2010 11:28 PM

You're totally right in my opinion. This is the only place where it isn't used on a motorway that I've heard of.

But, you never know, this may be one where the police are actively improving road safety by targetting the very worst offenders, rather than targeting the big cashcow lumbering past.

mj 18 June 2010 11:36 PM

I've seen SPECS on other rural roads, A631 into gainsborough for instance, though it's not straight, it's hardly C&F bendy.

2nd point is good, and I hadn't considered that. But we are talking about the police here? :D

alloy 19 June 2010 02:29 AM

i think the clue is in the title "average speed check" ..... this is England and i assure you it is in the simplest context of those words as tathan said, speed = distance/time:wall:

tathan 19 June 2010 03:01 AM

Yeah, what's right or wrong is immaterial, what is provable beyond reasonable doubt is what's important - someone has to stand in front of 12 of us in a court of law and tell them that although the person did 47mph average through a 50mph limit we'd still like to convict them because they must have gone over 50 SOMEWHERE!!!

Leslie 19 June 2010 08:41 AM

Like other speed measuring devices, they make assumptions which are not on the side of the motorist.

Yes, Nottinghamshire have quite a few. They were also the first Police Authority to use them, the first to use red light cameras, they have HUNDREDS of fixed cameras and WANTED to be the first to trial the so-called "tailgating camera".

Meanwhile, look at their performance in the real world: one of the worst for gun crime, the worst for street crime, one of the worst for robbery, the worst for burglary etc etc etc.

Notts Chief Constable = waste of space.

One of the more difficult counties to get a gun licence too!

You'll have to be doing daft speed amounting to dangerous driving to get to crown court.
As has been previously mentioned, proper legal advice may be preferential to mere supposition and rumour...........

Terminator X 19 June 2010 10:10 PM

Just tailgate a car as you approach the camera then exceed the speed limit to your hearts content ;)

I drove through a new rear-facing SPECS installation this week...

They will still get you somehow, one way or another.
