Mobile Speed Vans

Hi
Do mobile speed vans police or otherwise have to be marked , as too does the operator have to be visible either out or in the van ?

tathan 18 June 2010 06:41 PM

Not as far as I know. I think they have to operate in an area that is signed as a speed camera enforcement area but I'm not sure if that's force policy or law.

North Wales Police have a horse van with a camera poking out so they certainly are allowed to hide them...

They can catch you coming towards themas well as going away/past so be warned

If it was unmarked it could be an ANPR van looking for uninsured and non mot'd vehicles

paul, it was a camera have received NIP in post .

Sorry to say there is no need for them to be marked.
It has been suggested that its not in the spirit by some motoring groups, The only thing they have to do is park in a place that has been "dynamically risk assessed" (if its not a hard standing police vehicle site).
As soon as invisibility cloaks are perfected they technically could even use them!!!!

if you dance round a fairy ring 3 times with your fingers crossed chanting " i was`nt speeding" then its void.

Scamera vans

If you see one, park up safely and legally and then approach the van and knock on and ask what they are doing. Pretend to be interested etc and just waste their time. Then start taking pics of the van and the operator (normally a civilian and not a copper). They will probably get up set at this stage and ask what do you think you are doing etc.... Tell them you're taking pics to protect the public! They can't stop you as they are in a public place. If we all did this all the time and posted the pics on the net, how many people would want to work in a Scamera van ;-)

Actually Section 76 of the Counter Terrorism Act mean you can be prosecuted for taking a pictures of a cop ..

Or better still buy stink bombs and chuck a couple inside. If I could get away with it it would be a firebomb;)

They're not cops though.

A few handfuls of nails and screws deposited on their hard-standings is a good idea too

There should be a sign in the area warning of the possibility of speed measuring equipment.
