Despite what people might say there is nothing wrong with a military career.

If you don't want to join the army what about evening classes at college and pursue a different career path if you are not happy in your present job.

Seems like quite a jump for a change of job, unless you really want to do it.

War, it's never been so much fun
War, it's never been so much fun
Go to your brother
Kill him with your gun
Leave him lying in his uniform
Dying in the sun!
War, it's never been so much fun
War, it's never been so much fun

The Zohan 17 June 2010 01:56 PM

At 32 you will be getting on a bit in terms of the Army.

what do you do currently and what do you want to do?

Mitchy260 17 June 2010 02:32 PM

Are you allowed to join the military so late?

I thought the cut off point was 27/28?

Mitchy260 17 June 2010 02:36 PM

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle1290050.ece

Looks like they upped it a couple of years ago from 26 to 33.

How close are you to 33? The joining up process can be lengthy.

Agreed. Have a try for the RAF, you could get a decent trade out of it.

Army better. Quicker promotion.

Corporal rank within 3-4yrs average for an aircraft technician in the Army. 6-7yrs average for RAF.

Payscales are identical.

I dont think promotion should be the only reason. Try a commission, obviously dependent on your qualifications.

As far as I remember, once you get to the position to be promoted to Sgt in the army, it isnt as easy as in the RAF. HNCs required, and any sign of failure means marking time at Cpl until you leave. Something along those lines in any case. Ive done 12 years and am on the cusp of Sgt, and I am nothing special, so it can be done.
With the new SAC Tech rank(well, newish), there is the opportunity to get to Cpl after 3 assessments, so that is 4 years also. Ive seen it, on numerous occasions. (Techies only of course)

A lot of Army aviation guys get stuck at Sgt rank. Progressing from there is difficult as it involves artificer training to which a lot of guys do not want to do.

To get to an Army Sgt in Army aviation...

3mths basic training, 3mths waiting to get onto an aircraft course, followed by 18mths of aviation training. On completion of aviation training, automatic promotion to L/Cpl rank and then posted to a unit.

So that is 2yrs so far, then when at unit, the criteria is 1 year OJT and passing of a leadership course (Junior cadre) and then promoted to full corporal. (3yrs so far)

The criteria for Sgt is 5yrs after 1st promotion to L/Cpl having completed yet another leadership course (Senior cadre) along with an upgraded aviation course. You do these in the 4yrs you have to mark time as a corporal.

So promotion to Cpl in the Army can be as quick as 3yrs and promotion to Sgt as quick as 7 yrs.

From then on, is where it gets difficult. The majority spend the next 15yrs until their 22 is up as a Sgt rank, a few get Artisan SSgt, and a few go onto Artificer training where obviously that can lead onto W01 and officer commission.

99% of Army aviation guys will get to corporal within 4yrs and Sgt within 8yrs. Only a fair few in the RAF can state the same. I know a lot of guys in the RAF who have been SAC's for years upon years and then promotion to corporal after 8-10yrs.

Considering financial benefits, the quicker you are promoted, the more money you will earn. Therefore Army is the better path to go if you want to go into aviation. All services are paid the same and aviation is higher band in the payscales for both RAF and Army.

''Cushtier'' life in the RAF though, what's a 4 man tent:lol1:

I thougth 31 was the cut-off although with our current military 'commitments' it may have gone up.
