Distaster indeed. Think Carl's assuming that you just can't work out how to get the assembled alternator back in the car.
If you've taken the alternator itself to pieces and now can't put it back together, from what I recall it should be pretty self-explanatory. If you've taken the coil out of one or other of the end housings then warming the alloy parts in an oven should make putting it back a bit quicker.
If you can't work out how to get the commutator back in place, if you look carefully you will find a strategically positioned hole in the back cover through which you can stick an allen key. Use this to hold the brushes away until you have everything back together.
