Why do councils cut the verges?

I mean out in the countryside? Yesterday I passed at least FOUR different mowing machines in a 60 mile run.
I just don't see the point? Surely, this is one area we could do without, and save money?

I asked them around here once and they told me it was for insurance. They said if someone hits a curb or anything in the verge and the line is not clearly defined they can get sued.

At least thats what I think he said, he was grunting and had a mouthful of sandwhich.

forward visibility lines for safety, On a B road high verges cut the forward visibility down by 50%... I lose most of my overtaking straights!

I think it's all to do with fire prevention, they keep them cut because in the high summer they would become tinderboxes.

You never know, they might even still have a bit of pride in the appearance of their manor! Like they always used to do.

Ah but if those blokes aren't out there earning money cutting the verges then they don't have money to spend with other businesses and keep them afloat. It's a vicious circle this economy thing you know :D
