I'm looking into buying a 50cc moped/scooter to save the mileage and petrol on the scoob and as my job is across town 5 miles from where I live.

Anyone bought one before - is there anything particular I need to do or look out for? Basically, any tips for a complete newbie at this form of transportation?

Cheers
Neil

Scoobyjawa,
Hi mate me and the other half own a honda xr8s because we live/work from home in the town centre and i did not like the scoob being noticed to be parked near where i live even though i have a garage(even garage has a alarm)so i leave it 5/10 mile away so the ped comes in very useful.
The ped is 50cc, flat out it does 36mph can be made to do 60mph:eek:with a bit of tampering.
We brought it brand new for £1945 on the road, insurance costs are £245 with 25% no claims discount.
Helmet cost £100 - £300 for a good one
Gloves £10-£15 must have for the frosty winter mornings
This is the best bit it cost £3.65:eek::eek::eek:to fill it from empty and it does about 130 miles a tankful.
Road tax is £15:eek:.
I got pulled up last oct for no gloves(sunny day)plod said i should be wearing gloves and full leathers(but not law):eek:bit much full leathers i think being only 50cc.

Go for it saved £1000s

Hope this helps need any more info just ask.

Darran

Thanks for the info mate - just the sort of info I was after. Gonna pop along to a couple of places tomorrow to take a looky.

Petrol useage sounds good :D My thoughts to re the leathers:eek:

I reckon I can recoup the cost of the 'ped in less than a year on the petrol I spend in the car - also doesn't do it much good with soooo many short journeys :(

Just out of interest - this mod to make em do 60mph instead of 36, how do you do that then? - that would HAVE to be done ;) :D Costs?

Anyway - thanks again!

He's off looking at full de-cat zorst's for a Scooter already :D

ScoobyJawa 31 March 2002 04:53 PM

:D

Wonder if I can shove a Dawes on it? ;) :D

AFAIK the only protective clothing required in law is a BS approved helmet - these can be bought from £30.

Not that i am advising that you take to the streets in an open face helmet and a pair speedos :)

scoobyjawa
i have not had my done but some ppl i know have had theres done and thay leave me standing.
part of the mod(like chrisB said)is something to do with a washer in the zorst.
I see by your location you live somewhere in the south east a company just down the road from me at LONG SUTTON Nr kings lynn does this mod
most places dont do it because of warranty and your insurance may be invalid because the law says it should only do 35mph(laws are made to be broken)

prices £100-£900 depends on type of bike

ScoobyJawa 31 March 2002 10:16 PM

lol :D

Come on - how about I go for the worlds first twin turbocharged moped :D

I may have to look into that - under 40 is a bit sluggish!!!

Do you know any company names? Mail me offline if ya like...

Thanks mate
Neil

YHM:)

ChrisB 31 March 2002 11:07 PM

LOL. Isn't the idea to get better fuel economy than the Scoob though? :D

ScoobyJawa 01 April 2002 10:03 AM

That was originally the plan Chris, but you never plan on half the mods you do eh?!!  :D

Thanks for the mail Darran. :D

ScoobyJawa 01 April 2002 03:21 PM

Well I've done the deed :D

I've picked up a brand new Yamaha Aerox 100 `Max Biaggio` Edition. Got the scooter, helmet, gloves, 1 years insurance, 1 year RAC, and the CBT for 2k for the lot :D Seemed like a pretty good deal and will do 55mph out of the tin. Right now for mods..... ;) :D

I'll be saving the cost per month on the fuel that would have gone in the scoob :D And now I get the bonus of keeping the miles down on her :D

ChrisB 02 April 2002 10:23 AM

Nice one mate.

I can just see you at the garage, in goes £5 of Optimax and £5 of Octane Booster :D

ScoobyJawa 02 April 2002 11:07 AM

:D

I'll have to get it along to the next RR day ;) supposed to put out 7.5bhp  lol!!!!!

ScoobyJawa 02 April 2002 11:54 AM

That's a pretty  looking scooter :)

Disco 02 April 2002 03:01 PM

Neil, you lazy git:p:

5 miles? Surely you could do that on a mountain bike or something?

ScoobyJawa 02 April 2002 03:44 PM

Can't be arsed with the hills mate :p :D

Main reason for not going the push bike route (I do have one :p) was that by the time I got to work I'd be sweating like a whore in church and there is no proper changing/shower facilities at work. :( Gotta think of my colleagues ;)

If we had the shower/changing I'd be on the push bike in a shot....

Disco 02 April 2002 03:59 PM

or..........get some inline skates and hook a ride on the back of other traffic?:D:D

Scott W 02 April 2002 04:05 PM

Neil you'll have to see if you can hang off it and get your knee down going round the corner ;) like they try to in the racing series! :D

I'll have to keep my ears open now for the sound of you buzzing along the road now, as well as the old Scoobysport back box! :p:D

ScoobyJawa 02 April 2002 04:12 PM

Inline skates - Dammit disco you should have come up with that idea sooner - you could've saved me a fortune ;)

Scott - how many patches do I need to sew onto my jeans so that won't hurt me ickle knees ;)
Actually I was gonna try to weld the SS BB onto the 'ped....... :D

bwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrppppp pop pop pop bang burble :D

If you want the ultimate step-though, you have got to go for the Gilera 180. Tuning consists of a 210cc kit, large carb, and new exhaust. Then if its all done properly you'll get 0-60 in 4.5secs and 110mph top whack. I met somebody who had his in this spec, and he took great delight in cruising the dual carriageway at 85-90mph and looking at people's reactions.

ScoobyJawa 02 April 2002 11:20 PM

Darran,

Looks pretty similar :D - it will be a while before I get my knee down ;) - only thing I've ever been on with two wheels is a push bike!!!! Nice one at getting the piccy right straight away ;)
In fact the X8R was one of the ones I was looking at.....

Should be a laff anyway!! Would be cool to cruise down the dual carriageway doing 70-80 on a scooter though - bet it will suprise a few people. Right, now just gotta find someone who can tune a Yamaha scooter ;) :D

Reffro - that sounds totally mental!!! :D 4.5 to 60 on a scooter  :D:D:D:D:D:D
