I can only see the presence of the cameras and the information in that story will increase accidents.
There is always someone on the motorway that it so important they have to do 90 whilst everyone else is doing 50. That inflated sense of importance coupled with the fact that every camera you pass you need to be in a different lane surely only stands to cause accidents. Obviously in an ideal world people would just do the speed limit on the roads and speed on the track, as the world is far from ideal they are going to have review the use of SPECS |

Despite what you may read in the press, SPECS is not lane specific, or limited to vehicles that enter and exit the zone in the same lane. |
Even if this was the case you don't know which two cameras are linked together so there's a fairly good chance that even if you do swap lanes you may well end up in the same one as when you passed the first of the linked pair.
You may as well just stick to the limit and hope they don't roll out too many more of them which seems like a fair chance given the new government's declared policy. |
I have a question
Say for example we have 3 cameras on a stretch of dual carriage way I exceed speed through camera 1 in lane 1 Then I change to lane 2 and pass camera 2 Then I change back to lane 1 and pass camera 3 Will I be picked up because of camera 1 and camera 3? If so then changing lanes is pointless? |

Albeit good news I guess ;) I always swap lanes between cameras although you don't know which ones are paired so it's still a bit dodgy ... just choose a random lane & switch each time. My front plate fell off recently so they've got no chance of catching me anyways!

Has anyone ever got caught by one as I see people tanking through them all the time?
I did used to like the ones nr J11 M4 as they start either side so if I joined at j11 Id only see the last camera so happily boot it past all those still going 50. Simon |

hutton_d, i agree. stick to 53 and you'll find you're overtaking quite a lot of people.
I do this every other weekend twice through the m3 average speed cameras, so 53 is fine :) |

Not aware of anyone ever having been caught (did a poll on here a while back). You notice that THEY have started setting them up on exit / entry points now :(

They put these things on a stretch of road in N.Ireland between Bangor and Belfast
So on my journey to work which is about 14 miles probably 9 of these miles is guarded by these cameras From what I understand they went live early in 2008 and by the end of the year a massive number of 4 people were detected. I don't remember how much they cost to install, but no doubt it was a worthwhile investment :rolleyes: On another note - I do stick to the posted speed limit (which as a matter of interest changes 3 times in the camera zone from 60 to 40 to 50 and back to 60 again) but even in the 40 section there are people passing me doing I would guess 55 Clearly they know something I dont. |
When the average speed cameras first came out for road works in the uk, the change of lanes could work. However since its been quite heavily reported by works that cars ingnore the speed limit and change lanes to avoid getting a fine / points, the cameras have been updated, to detect lane changes - although not all areas have received these updates.

As some earlier posters have asked, has anyone on here actually ever been caught speeding in these. I don't know of anyone who has.
For all we know the things may not even be wired up - not that I want to test it. :) |

AFAIK they do work lane to lane but they are not type approved to ticket based on lane changed enforcement. So technically the website is correct.

I am under the understanding Matt is correct, the cameras have the capability to cover multiple lanes however type approval was not sought. As for people getting caught, I have seen some examples, and the information on each set is readily available through a FOI request. The current ones near me are on the M80. The TRO for them is fatally flawed in numerous points (limit signs not lit, police/fire brigade of all affected areas not informed officially etc etc). As most of these in the UK are to cover major roadworks, and not permanent sites, then a very close look at the TRO should through up numerous points of defence to any speeding charge against the lowered limit. |

This system uses infra red lights to illuminate the front number plates i believe?
so what about fitting front driving lights being fitted to the car with infra red lamps in them and pointing them up slightly and drive with them on, this will blind the specs camera's as the contrast will be to great for them to see through the light pointing towards them and read the number plate but wont effect other drivers as it is infra red. The other thing i wondered was if putting a number of number plate sized and type sponsors stickers on the front of a car would cause the computer software to not be able to always locate the actual number plate and therefore not work? |
