options? Tune or swop

There is a possibility of a promotion in the next couple of months at work. If all goes well i may look at my options. I have a 03 wrx which has been faultless and has a fraction over 50k on the clock.
It already has uprated pads and disks, exhaust and rear bushes have been recently uprated.
I would either spend a couple of grand on getting ARB's, front bushes and lowering springs along with decat, pinks, sti turbo, and all the bits necessary to get it to 300bhp.
Or would it just be a better option to chop it in and get an sti ppp for the extra 5k for a nice 2005 model?
How would the economy compare from a tuned wrx and a ppp sti?
Insurance would ruffly be the same if not cheaper on the wrx.
Any other considerations?

STI unless you're planning on spending a massive amount, in which case it doesn't matter which you start with.

Get a nice STi

daz1968 09 June 2010 06:13 PM

I am planning on doing that right now, spent a little on my wrx, was planning on sti turbo and injectors, but changed my mind. Probably because I have had the car 3 years and fancy a change as well. But have decided if I start off with an sti then I can always go further in the future. But it all depends on what you want.

graeme jones 09 June 2010 06:29 PM

thats what i was thinking and if i take my ninja 2 off and remap an st i would be blown away.
Just a touch concerned about getting 17mpg lol as the wrx isn't too bad 24-27mpg mixed driving.

daz1968 09 June 2010 07:58 PM

how do you get that i average twenty in my wrx but then my work run is three miles each way so never gonna do good. Dont forget an sti turbo and injectors on a wrx will make it same as sti as well. And you will have no issues with the transmission which is my main reason for changing. Although i want a twin scroll import when i can find one

graeme jones 09 June 2010 09:01 PM

I do 12 miles motorway there and back don't open it up too much. It's not bad on the juice never had less than 23mpg even when driven hard. I had over 30mpg from it not long ago going like a granny.
Im not too concerned about fuel but wouldn't want to increase consumption by much.

nick172sport 09 June 2010 09:08 PM

think your insurance will go up loads as we live in bad areas if you buy a sti my mates have had quotes from the usual companies on a sti and have been ridicoulous check insurance first

I'd spend the money on suspension and engine upgrades. It will cost you far less to get 300 bhp for a very quick road car, and if you keep your original parts and can be bothered you can strip it break it back to normal and recoup some of your outlay when you sell it. If you go STI, go JDM.

JDM:thumb: i wish i had one, much more tuning potential, as well as better just standard

scouser321 09 June 2010 09:36 PM

i have a 53 plate wrx, it has just had a bit of an upgrade.

VF35 Turbo (from a WR1)
STi Intercooler
silicone hoses
walbro 255 fuel pump
full decat exhaust
prodrive back box
550cc injectors
Remapped by Andrew Carr
WR1 Suspension

324bhp / 309lbft

Above all it is reliable.

I toyed with the STi idea, but there where to many neagtives at this moment for me to make the change.

Go for the STi :thumb:

dynamix 10 June 2010 09:24 AM

and then get that remapped ;)

badman1972 10 June 2010 12:27 PM

I toyed with the same idea on my '53 plate WRX, eventually decided to go for an STi and have it mapped - I gave the WRX to the missus, best decision I ever made LOL.

how do you work that one out? adding a turbo and injectors makes your wrx into an sti. not by a long chalk mate.

engine internals, suspension, drive train, body shape, interior all different.

daz1968 10 June 2010 01:37 PM

I think you mis understood, what I mean is a wrx running sti and turbo is likely to be same as sti on fuel consumption, I know there is a lot of differences in the car, just fuel consumption was one of the factors to choose between sti and wrx.

Terminator X 10 June 2010 01:44 PM

IMHO swap for a remapped STi rather than PPP version. Better still to start with a Jap one too ;)

TX.

ahh right. you would be right there then.

I've looked into this recently too. I worked out it would be around £3k cheaper to sort out my suspension and take it to Powerstation for the 315hp upgrade than change it for a late Blob STI. A quick quote on an STI was £300 more than I currently pay for my lightly modified WRX too.
If however I saw a good early 2006 grey Hawk STI with PPP and they offered me a good price for mine then I could change my mind :norty:
