Can't stop posting problems tonight :(

Just got scooby doo markII today (STI2) and after giveing her a fairly good test drive, I brought her back down from Liverpool to Surrey. Once that I had come off the motorway and had stopped at traffic lights. Moving off resulted in slight clunking from the rear as I can best describe it. At low speeds moving off you notice it, once above that, can't hear it. She wasn't doing it during the test drive, just when the drivetrain was well and truly warmed up. Stayed with me for the rest of the trip home, whenever moving in petrol station, traffic lights etc.

Any ideas guys? Poss no oil in the rear dif, or knowing my bad luck with scoobs, something worse (Previous girl had 2 different diffs and gearboxes in her in 1 month to get her sorted :()

Cheers,

Nick :)

Do I smell or something?

Dont quote me on this as im not an expert, but you might have
the mechanical lsd used also in the type R.Ive been told they have
a tendancy to clunk and chatter, you can also feel it locking the
rear wheels if you acellerate hard out of a turning from standstill. If you have got one of these diffs be very careful
what oil you put in it as you will lock it all the time with
the wrong one.Use LSD oil only.

Apparantly, she has an adjustable diff on her. Down by the handbrake, there is a little switch with 'C.DIFF' on it with a L at the front. Nasty feeling switch, sort of feels lik it has a little click switch when it it pulled right back, then the centre of the switch is no-man's land then what seems like another switch type click feely thing right up at the L. I have only driven her pulled right the way back. Can't really tell if it does anything when you do play with it.

Nick :)

Nick,
The type R also has the centre diff lock.the further forward
you push it up in to orange segments the more it locks the front and rear wheels together. The only time you would ever lock it would be on a loose surface never tarmac. You will mainly notice
it when turning moving slowly, the more you lock it the harder the car will be to turn. This diff probably isnt the one making the
noises, its more likely the rear diff.

This one doesn't appear to have any of the orange notches on the switch, what I meant by no man's land was that it just moved freely in the middle area, notches, markers or clicks at all. Strange..... Anyone else come across a basic C.DIFF Switch like this before? Imagine a dimmer switch basically, with 1 gentle off click at either end of the turn.

Nick :)

Nick,
The green and orange segments are in between your rev counter
and speedo,as you move the dimmer type switch foward it lights up a higher segment on the dash ,the top segment has lock written on it.

Mines a 97 so it may be different.Ive got two water spray switches
a manual one which doesnt light up,but you can hear water spray motor when you push it,and an auto water spray which has an orange light. Not sure about your diff lock ,have you checked if your MY car came with diff lock?

I have a 4 door, N reg STI2. I have looked at the sidc faq, but unfortunatly that doesn't help in this case :(. Some people believe that it could be specced as an sxtra back when these were out in Japan, but noone knows for sure..... I am taking the centre dash apart again tomorrow, so I will see if that switch actually connects up to anything! I am starting to get a bit dubious.......

Thanks a lot so far for all of your help :)

Any other ideas/info folks most appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick :)
