Thinking of going to the dark side???
As title, after owning... well i lost count after 9 Imprezas, i have had dissapointment and failures time after time!!, chasing the magic 500bhp and costing me endless amounts of cash. Just had a 7 week blip with a Jag S Type R which was great fun, but now feel the need to be back in a 4 wheel Jap car, and after looking in to a nicely modded Evo 5 or 6 with forged engine and all the toys, seems they are a lot more reliable and robust and 500bhp is such a realistic figure. I accept they maybe a wee bit more costly on rountine main, so any positive views would be appreciated. Thinking that a nice Type R at around £8k in comparison with like for like Evo 5.;)

EVO 6 RS is the one - and get it forged with the right turbo ect.
Way chaeper and easier to get big power out of than a scoob. Would rather drive a scoob. For the noise alone. But it costs way more chasing big figures in a subaru than in an EVO |
i have a freind with a 5 and find the car easier to drive/live with(deffo when driving hard) but also i feel personally i would get uesd to/bored of an evo quicker than my scoob agree on the making of power easier with the evo but deffo more ££££s One of my famous stolen quotes :D "the evo has the heart but the scooby has the soul" after 9+ scooby's though why not go for it!!!!
|
Forget mere forged...
2.3 @ 500 bhp is cheap as chips. HTH dunx |
Got a couple of mates with evos, one with an evo 5 and one with an evo 6 and they seem like they are spending shed loads of money just to keep them going.
I agree with it being cheaper to get an evo to over 400 bhp but 500 is still going to cost alot of money no matter which car. Was tempted in a 7 myself but ended up sticking with Subaru and got a spec c in the end! |
Think lost have been in his position I test drve a evo 8 mr 340
and boy was it impressive but for me lacked that subaru feel might be down to the noise and ended up getting a p1. Still browse the evo's on pistonheads and there are some very well spec'd cars going, for decent money although bare in mind the evo 5 n 6 are old cars now and might be worth saving a few pennys and getting the 8 |
The later cars had chocolate clutches to "protect" the gearbox/transfer thingy....
As my ex-boss found after only one launch ! But I still fancy a toy ( 5 or 6 ), it's an itch I have to scratch.... dunx |
I've tried to fall for the Evo a couple of times but I never love them like the imprezas!
They are indeed easier to get more power from but bare in mind they feel very linear and smooth in the power delivery dept. I've been in a late 400bhp Evo 6 and it was fast but it was really fuss free and uneventfull. My 360bhp type r felt a lot more fun. My previous car was an Evo 6 with around 300bhp and my current 02 Sti wagon 'feels' gruntier. |
Mmm lots of conflicting opinions just like i thought!
Keeping options open, i would like the MR 340 but dont want to spend that much, just want a nicely specced 5 or 6 between £8- £9k with forged engine ect. Many thanks for opinions chaps:thumb: |
plenty of them out there brad, get over on the lancer register (MLR) if you are not already, seen a few on there that might be right up your street
|
Had 3 classic scoobs and have been to the dark side with an evo viii mr. Came back though in a p1 now, the power delivery of the evo is more linier not as brutal as the scoobs so they dont feel as quick even though they are proberly quicker.
|
Would have loved to of kept the evo and had the p1 as well, best of both worlds lol.
|
both great cars . Sounds like you need a change though buddy

Scott get me i trader rating up mate ...Jag going on a 2000 mile trip tmz ill let you know how it went ...
Evo... got to be a 7> anything under looks old and dated. |
evo 6s and 7s have weak rods - 350 hp is safe to run, forged rods and you can run 450-500hp
8s onwards you can run 400hp the box and diffs are usually good for 500hp but there are issues with th rear diff, sometimes exploding - you need an rs diff usually about £1500 i had a red tommi mak, looked the dogs and everyone would tell you -lol but sold it saved myself 6 grand and got a sti ra v4 and tbh the handling is the same and because its light the power feels about the same. |
Think sometimes it's an itch that needs to be scratched I have thoght about t many times but always end up buying another impreza and each time I say I won't lol, got a feelng it's the sound of the flat four that does it, or a juicy v8 might have to be on the cards to see f that does the trick
|
You'll regret it without doubt ... Evo's have no soul :( Evo 9 GT looks  though:

I had an Evo 8 MR, running 400 bhp. I didnt like the build quality of the Evo, just didnt feel as solid as my old classic.
Evo 6 speed was knotchy, brakes squeeled and juddered like mad even tho I changed them. Steering juddered at high speed, even with new balanced front tyres. Just didnt feel right. I only kept it 5 months. back in an Hawkeye STI, running standard power and its 10 times better than my previous Evo. |
My two pence worth. Had three imprezas and one evo 7. If i had my time again it would be a close call but i would buy an evo5/6. Never thought i would say that tbh.

Right guys, took a 6 out today and must admit it did'nt really do much for me, was forged with print out 390 bhp:sleep:
Pls no one shoot me down but i have had a couple of GTiR's and must say i loved them, what are your opinions on this!!! http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1736260.htm |
^^ 500hp, mental

Evo... got to be a 7> anything under looks old and dated. Trader rating sorted Fud, sorry for delay. Cool, the Jag will be an awesome mile muncher, doing it in style pal:cool: Keep us up to date:thumb: Say Fud check out Pulsar i've got my eye on!!!!!!! |
Fair play its a fast car but the looks.... not for me! Have heard the GTIRs are hard to shift when you want rid!?
|
A good gti-r is a nice car but they never handle as well as Evo or Impreza, feels like too much weight at front always plough on straight if you push them in the bends.
They do however have the soul the Evo lacks. My last one was really nice, 94 rust free, clean underneath etc. Was also running fmic (which is best gti-r mod I've tried) mongoose exh, induction and greddy boost controller running 1.2bar and it was a little savage! I've had 5 gti-r's and a good one is a great car... Finding a good one these days is another question! |
sure you couldn't carry SUL to the Evo. would break yer heart.
|
I think there are a few misconceptions about the Evo's,here!
They don't have "chocolate" clutches that have been "de tuned",to make the other parts last longer. Your boss obviously tested one that had been abused! The standard clutches will not stand up to constant hard launches, though. If that is your thing, get a stronger clutch! Some people have run standard clutches with more than 400 hp and similar torque, with no problems. It all depends how you drive. I agree about the brakes. The standard ones are hopeless.I changed to performance friction, floating discs, with Carbotech XP8's.This was a brutal set up.No fade, whatsoever:thumb: A standard Impreza will feel a lot faster, than a standard Evo,as they deliver their power differently. As has been mentioned, the Evo is more linear. Also the rods are not a problem.I ran my 5 at 1.7 bar(397hp/360lb/ft)for 3 years, with no problems.Plenty people run their 6's with more than that, with no problems, although, just like the Impreza, there is the odd failure. It is all in the mapping. Having said that there are a few people who think the 7 engines aren't as strong. Once you go to a 9,with the MIVEC,it is so easy to get a reliable and cheap 400hp/400lb/ft. I like both marques,(I have had three of each)they are just different in how they drive, but still loads of fun, whatever you get.The Impreza definitely sounds better, though.:thumb: Just my tuppence worth Chris |
Any ideas, am now just after the fastest thing money can buy now so keeping options totally wide open;)
