how much oil does you scoob consume - 2.5 engines.

Hi all,

I have recently had the head gasket changed and have noticed that the car seems to use a fair amount of oil, all my milkeage is motorway and usually sitting at 4k revs.

Is this normal, its a 2.5 engine on the hawkeye sti.

Thanks

sti_rye84 21 May 2010 08:06 AM

have you noticed this before your headgasket went and is there any evidence of a leak?

p.rite.sh 21 May 2010 08:07 AM

i didnt really notice it as the headgasket went pretty much as i had it. no leaks that i can see mate...

sti_rye84 21 May 2010 08:49 AM

how much oil is it using

p.rite.sh 21 May 2010 08:58 AM

erm, i've put in a litrefor 450 miles, to be fair, it wasnt all gentle driving though.

Shaun 21 May 2010 09:01 AM

If it's used a litre in 450miles that sounds excessive for an OE setup. Intact that's excessive full stop!

hawkeye_WRX 21 May 2010 09:30 AM

My 2006 2.5 WRX Hawkeye use practically no oil, in fact my last oil change was 2k ago, I drive the car hard all the time and I cannot see that the oil has gone down on the dipstick at all. My car has 43k FYI.

I never had any serious oil usage even with an HG leak.
Oil use did go up a little when I started remapping, but a catch tank solved that.
The worst it ever got to was about 100 ml/1000 miles with mostly motorway use.

Mus 21 May 2010 10:09 AM

mine hardley uses anything and i check my oil excessively just to be safe

greatgonzo 21 May 2010 11:38 AM

2006 spec d mapped to 333 bhp no oil useage.

alcazar 21 May 2010 11:57 AM

Is it true that a forged engine WILL use oil? Someone on another forum mentioned it........

+1 2500 miles no oil used.

Tidgy 21 May 2010 12:26 PM

how much did hte headgasket cost you? (price will give an indication of what was done)

magneel1 21 May 2010 12:35 PM

Interesting thread, my 2.5 forged, uses wayyyy too much.
I believe i have a problem with a piston ring!

:(

IggyRB320 21 May 2010 01:06 PM

MY07 RB320, oil changed every 6 months - no usage!
Mainly motorway, with a play at the weekends!

merlin24 21 May 2010 06:22 PM

Its a possibility that the piston rings have lost their tension if the engine has been overheated at sometime.
A Compression Test and Cylinder Leakage Test would narrow the problem down.

Broken ringlands :)

sti_rye84 23 May 2010 12:20 PM

hey if the head gasket has been replaced take it back as the car as been overheated too much and piston rings are ether burnt out or stuck in effect you need a rebuild or new motor mate 1 ltr per 450 miles is way too much

p.rite.sh 25 May 2010 11:24 PM

its going in next week, many thanks for you responses.

Im driving it gently to see if it drunks any until then

thanks

badman1972 26 May 2010 10:16 AM

I'm sure I've read before that normal use can be anything upto 1 litre per 1000 miles, but that would still suggest yours has excessive use. Good luck with the checks and hope its simple/cheap mate...........:thumb:

ive gone from full to low in about 1k miles on mine. Mine is a built 2.5 with forged pistons also.

Going to monitor usage now.

Always thought forged engines use oil but im not sure on amount to expect

dunx 11 June 2010 05:20 PM

I remember bigarf's built 2.5 used to fill the catch can's, catch can with a litre in about 70 miles....

BP shares anyone ?

i've got 2.5 06 wrx, cometic head gaskets, with td05 18g, uses about 0.8 ltr every 1000 miles with hard driving, i can also smell a little burning oil from exhaust when oil temp up ,i've poss got oil ring problem so going to monitor it.

Cd09 12 June 2010 01:02 PM

Ye mine hardly uses any oil no matter how i drive it, obviously its always warmed up n cooled down properly though. It is a standard engine as well, no mods.

how many miles have everyones cars done...im at 45k

bigarf 12 June 2010 04:01 PM

this is a good one,the 2.5l forged engine i had built at pennine subaru used a litre of oil every 100 miles.

34k miles regular service's

billsandhu 12 June 2010 06:09 PM

mines is a forged 2.5. the oil use between servicing is barely measurable.

that was the 3rd attempt mate, the first build used so much i had to put another bottle onto the catch can to catch the flood of oil running through it.i think you would call that a little excessive.
