Does Newage STi tyres fit WRX alloys?

I'm thinking of upgrading my standard WRX tyres (215/45/17) to the RE070 (225/45/17).

Will these tyres fit my alloys?

ScoobyDoo69 20 May 2010 07:21 PM

My dad has 235/45/17s on his bugeye WRX alloys if that helps.

BigSeal 20 May 2010 07:36 PM

thanks mate :thumb:

thats whats on my car man

They will fit on the rim, but will throw the speedo out by the equivalent of the rolling radius you have increased... basically the speedo will get more accurate ( as wheel tyre combo now covers more road than the o;d tyre / wheel combo per revolution ... ) so less 10% allowance if stopped speeding!

Try the Toyo tyre web site as they have a will these fit tool which shows what will and won't and explains all this stuff!

kosta: the 235-45-17 re070s your dad fitted, did they rub at all on a standrad newage? thinking about running them on mine, just bought a set, heard arches might need rolling? can anyone confirm?

ScoobyDoo69 10 March 2011 02:22 PM

He has no problems, his car is lowered too. Even on the track this past week, no rubbing issues at all :)

yes they will fit and be a bit wider that is the only change as you are keeping the 45 profile thats the height of the tyre from the rim so shouldnt get any speedo probs :thumb:

215/45 R17 rolling circumference (1 rev. of the tyre) = 1965mm

225/45 R17 r.c. = 1993mm

So theoretically the speedo should overread by c.1.4% (1993/1965)...

So at what was originally indicated at 70mph for example, will now read c.71mph! LOL i.e. nothing to be concerned about re. slower acceleration.

ScoobyDoo69 10 March 2011 03:29 PM

All speedos overread as standard anyway, so if anything you will make it more accurate ;)

They, by law, should overread slightly... So that you don't unwittingly break speed limits.

I think they build in a c.5-10% overread. So, for example, at an indicated 70mph (on the speedo clock), the actual road speed would be c.64-67mph. Ergo, safe from the law.

I think the only speed that the speedo (std car) has to be accurate is at 30mph i.e. an indicated 30mph = a road speed of 30mph.

P.S. And yes, yes, I know most UK police forces allow 10%, or 10% + 2mph leeway (but that's another http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...8968/topic.jpg )... ;)

Sorry I meant over read. So if the tyre gets bigger then the speedo gets more accurate.

Dad went from 215/45/17 to 235/45/17 and his speedo is nearly bang on now :D

Eggy, your wheels are actually wider than my dads, so if anything the tyres will fit better, however I am not sure if the difference in offset will then make them rub. I doubt it though, as there are plenty of JDM models with 235/45/17s as standard :)

another thing kosta. how wide are the wrx newage alloys? are they 7.5j like the STi's? and with this bthread being nearly a year old.. any reason your dad opted to stick to the 235 jdm tyre size over the 225? bearing in mind they cost a shed load more lol or is he still on the same set of tyres? (only reason im buying the 235's is ive got the set cheaper than 225)

i hope not lol we'll see, just got some cusco adjustable lateral arms and a few other suspension trick bits, so will see what we can do with the geomretry to make them fit better :)

ScoobyDoo69 10 March 2011 04:23 PM

He wanted fatter tyre walls lol :D

He is still on his 235s as he doesn't do much mileage.

WRX alloys are 7j, and as you rightly said, STi are 7.5, so that size tyre will fit better on your wheel.

Out of interest (PM me if you like) where are you getting these 235/45/17 RE070s.. I may want some for my BBS wheels, as the tyres on there are a bit crap as I found out at a track day last week lol.

eggy790 10 March 2011 04:33 PM

lol fair enough, makes sense.

You dont fancy selling me your wheels yet do you? :P

lol as for the tyres, a chap on 22b forum had them for sale with delivery milage, and i just saw them this morning so bought them lol £350

chepeast i can find 225's for is £460 delivered (was going to buy them anyway at the end of the month)

so this was a nice bargain, as for supplier for 235's i think Ian at Litchfield is the only person who supplies them/can get hold of them. From what ive heard though they are like £200 a tyre!

ScoobyDoo69 10 March 2011 04:41 PM

No chance, these BBS are the sex :D

Wrong !

45 is the aspect ratio.

They will be bigger ( diameter/circumference ) as well as wider.

dunx

P.S. Dunx runs 235/35/19 and even with lots of camber they needed the arches relieving...

eggy790 11 March 2011 04:20 PM

will i have issues then dunx? on 17's?

dunx 11 March 2011 11:00 PM

All about the offset, 44mm on mine, and R888's have a very square shoulder.

dunx

P.S. My Vredesteins don't scuff as they are more normal around the shoulder of the tyre.
