turbo removal new age
 

hi peeps.
having not done this before i was curious how the turbo was mounted in the car.
is it held simply by the up and down pipes and induction pipework or are there brackets also?

the reason im asking is that im planning a turbo/exhaust upgrade later in the year and ive heard horror stories about the job of removing the downpipe due to corroded bolts etc.could i remove the turbo with downpipe attached and remove it on the bench say!:wonder:cheers.

lots of wd40 on them over the days. if they undo its pretty easy. remove downpipe to get access to uppipe bolts. drain water also. is pretty easy but when refittingit a pain to get the water pipe on under turbo. its either oil or water pipe. 1 of them

Just spray alot of wd40 on the dp nuts when its hot a day or two before you remove it. Make sure you use a gd heavy wrench or breaker bar. The turbo sits on top of the uppipe flange. All you need to remove are the nuts on dp, turbo flang, oil feed line & water lines. You cant remove the turbo together with the dp.

The process for taking it off is easy, as stated above, just be sure you have a breaker bar :)

Putting a new one on is a farking nightmare!!!! getting the oil return pipe in is a swine and will frustrate you to high heaven...... but the work is well worth it :D

remove

dump valve
intercooler
ic brackets from engine for easier access
move the clutch reservoir to one side
remove heat shield
spray wd40 on turbo bolts
boost pipes on housing/actuator
undo oil feed and gently bend out the way and put copper washers x2 safe
jubilee on intake/turbo pipe
undo all 5 down pipe bolts 4 from the top 1 from underneath
down pipe off
remove water pipes top and bottom of turbo and plug up with old spark plugs
remove 3 turbo bolts
give it a good pull to release it from rubber oil return pipe


refit in reverse
to make life easier put the rubber oil return pipe back on the engine and tighten up with a jubilee clip to stop it sliding down when refitting.

i always remove the intake bolt allen key at the front so you can wiggle the intake a little for when trying to get the lip back on the turbo

use subaru gaskets only

refill water up via the turbo.

Maybe a good idea that you have a spare stud available.... in case a nut picks up on the turbo. :)

Clamp the hose with a jubilee clip to the lower pipe.
The turbo oil return should just push onto the hose without it sliding down.
