Internet issue - quick tip pls
 

All of a sudden I keep getting failed page loads in my browser - error is 'Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com'. Usually a reload/refresh sorts it, but its annoying! Its the same symptom on the WiFi iPhone and all 3 PC's. Modem router (an AOL one that has been fine since the ISP switch at Xmas) has had lots of reeboots - ISP is Utility Warehouse.

Feels like a DNS issue - anyone any idea?

Does sound like DNS, try setting the DNS manually to the opendns servers

Had to to that on a friends netbook when the orange dns servers were mucking up

I do that on the router yes - then it will apply to all devices using it?

It's more likely to be the wifi connection randomly dropping out.

And AOLOL!

I've been using Google DNS and it's pretty good. Awesome IP addresses too
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

2 are hard wired to it mate and its on Utility Warehouse. Gonna trythese Google DNS's - thanks Jack.

Hmmm... I've changed DNS on my main machine LAN IP properties to be 8.8.8.8 but seems the router is not doing it - see pic. Its using my ISP default.

Can I set the DNS IN the router itself? This will then affect everything downstream and on Wi Fi too. Had a look but doesnt seem to be possible?

Hmmmm - Googling finds it a common issue. I've been trying to follow this guide http://muffinresearch.co.uk/archives...-dns-settings/ but my cmd window doesnt like 'telnet' and I dont know what that is either! Any ideas guys?

What router are you using?

I have a Netgear DG834GT and in the set up page - HTTP://196.168.0.1

Advanced settings.
Dynamic DNS

Mines set to service provider: www.DynDNS.org

However there is an option to use wildcards. If you select this I imagine you would get the option to enter the google DNS Jack had advised.


The Routers Help notes say:
Dynamic DNS Help
A Dynamic DNS (DDNS) Service provides a central public database where information (such as e-mail addresses, host names and IP addresses) can be stored and retrieved. The Dynamic DNS server also stores password-protected information and accepts queries based on e-mail addresses.

If you want to use a DDNS service, you must register for it. The Dynamic DNS client service provider will give you a password or key.

To set up for DDNS:

If you have registered with a DDNS service provider, select the Use A Dynamic DNS Service check box.
Select the name of your dynamic DNS Service Provider.
Type the Host Name that your dynamic DNS service provider gave you.
The DDNS service provider may call this the domain name.
Type the User Name for your DDNS account.
Type the Password (or key) for your DDNS account.
Click Apply to have the DDNS service used.

Use Wildcards - If you have DYNDNS as your DDNS service provider, you may select the Use Wildcards check box to activate this optional feature.

Note: The Router supports only basic DDNS and the login and password may not be secure. If you have a private WAN IP address, do not use DDNS service as it may lead to problems.

Thanks mate - I have the Thomson Speedtouch 585 Wireless ADSL Router. Have a DG834GT in the cupboard too - suspected faulty (but it might be OK now I switched ISP...)

To be honest its all working fine now I inputed Jack's Google DNS to the PC - despite what the modem says about the DNS its using... Refreshing not needed anyomre!
