what do i need to take my uk2000 impreza to 280bhp?

as above, all it has at moment is a pipercross panel filter and hayward and scott 2.5ich exhaust, forge dump valve and sti intercooler. so pretty standard.
a mate has a de-cat pipe for 50quid ,what next?dont want to change turbo as on a budget.
will the de-cat release more horse power?
bloke i got it off said it has a prodrive ecu??
im new to imprezas so any help is welcome
cheers

What year car is it? :)

Tony:)

olliecampbell 04 May 2010 08:03 PM

I'd say remap and you'll be pretty close.

Have you thought about upgrading the brakes and suspension though?

TonyBurns 04 May 2010 08:12 PM

Still need to know what year it is, so here goes the guessing.
IF the car is a 94-96 model, then you can fit an esl daughterboard and have that mapped, nice n cheap, 280bhp wont be much of a problem there, but as ollie has pointed out, brakes and suspension, these didnt exactly come fully furnished with the best setup in the world, damn a go cart has better stoppers
If the car is a 97/98 then your screwed, you need an after market ecu and your turbo isnt good enough to hit 280bhp, 270 yes, 280, no.
Now if you have the MY99/00 cars you still wont hit 280bhp :lol1: as with the 97 onwards cars, they run a smaller turbo over the earlier cars that had the TD05's, so there is one good point and that is the fact the ecu is mappable, bad point is that the maf sensors are fragile and dont like oiled filters/induction kits.

Tony:)

The Zohan 04 May 2010 08:20 PM

^^^^270bhp with a better suspension set-iup and brakes will be a quick, sorted car, it is not all about BHP.

Darc174 04 May 2010 08:45 PM

you will find it hard to get 280bhp on a Td04,

Change it to a TD05 or a Vf series and you can hit the 330bhp mark Easily

ade_sti 04 May 2010 10:17 PM

I have 282 bhp and 304 ft/ib

Have ported headers, custom up-pipe, standard filter, standard td04, det cat donpipe and full system, sti/prodrive ecu and bleed valve (to reduce spikes) running 1.25 bar.

99plate uk turbo

if i was you would get remap though - is safer and will run not as rich as mine top end & slightly more power

TonyBurns 04 May 2010 11:27 PM

1.4+ bar may get you 280bhp on a td04 but 1.25 definately wont.
The ppp peaks at just under 1.2 and that is 250bhp.
Now a hybid td04 on the oher hand.....

Tony:)

ade_sti 04 May 2010 11:55 PM

I have been to several RR and I put this power out - maybe my car have hybrid td04 as was owned by a guy who worked at Prodrive before me. My car peaks at 1.3 bar then hold 1.25 ish. Have had car 6 years.

rickbartlett 05 May 2010 07:22 AM

sorry chaps its a t-reg 99 model i think.so has the smaller turbo then.it has a prodrive ecu?

it has 4 pots as standard so they will do for now and has the stiffer sti suspension which im happy with for now.

how much difference will the de-cat make?

mr hat 05 May 2010 12:38 PM

decat helps the turbo spool up quicker and releases some power, but you wont get 280 with the prodrive ecu, you need it mapped using ecutek software but as others have said it will be 270bhp due to the small turbo which limits the power. i had full decat and panel filter and was mapped by andy forrest using ecutek and was putting out 267 which still made it a very quick car.

that sounds enuf for me mate? i ent got the money to go changin turbos etc,
just wanna get de-cat,front mount intercooler and re map and i will be happy for now lol

Ray T 05 May 2010 01:25 PM

mine has H&S openneck decat with splitter, uprated hoses to intercooler, std centre cat, prodrive backbox, tek 3 by bob rawle.
MY00
282 bhp 336 ftlbs

ps std TD04

rickbartlett 05 May 2010 03:17 PM

good power mate

TonyBurns 05 May 2010 04:17 PM

I wouldnt decat with the PPP ecu either, they have a tendancy to det nicely if you do :(

that seems a very optimistic torque figure for those mods, im pretty sure mine was around 280lb torque with same mods bar the hose from turbo to intercooler.

AlanPPP 05 May 2010 04:59 PM

Just don't fit VTA dump valve or you'll blow it up instantly ;)

As said a De-cat..fuel pump..panel filter and a proper remap should see you right. The TD04 will be on it's limit's though but many have ran 280 without problems. My old WRX ran 320 with a TD05 and the power delivery although a tad more laggy than the TD04 was much smoother and handled the power a lot better.

it has a forge dump valve fitted mate.y would a vta dump valve cause it to blow up?

AlanPPP 05 May 2010 08:54 PM

I was being sarcastic mate...Welcome to the forum :)

Ste RB5138 06 May 2010 01:01 AM

Mine has also made 276Bhp twice on the rollers with a standard TD04.

Its probably best you sell your Prodrive ECU on eBay for a few quid, buy a standard MY99 ECU and get a Ecutek remap for it.

rickbartlett 06 May 2010 07:08 AM

thanks for the welcome lol,

is my prodrive ecu not mapable then?
can u buy mapped ecu's?

Ray T 06 May 2010 09:04 AM

Mr Hat, Bob said it was one of the higher torque figure for a Td04, at the out set of the mapping I did say Id prefer lowdown/midrange rather than out&and out power, as it is not that useable in this camera infested land.

The Trooper 1815 06 May 2010 10:01 AM

At 280 bhp your starting to nudge the limits on the gearbox.

As said a standard UK 99MY ECU with a re-map, better fuel pump, good panel filter and exhaust will free up lots of fun. PPP ECU's wher designed to a limit and are not as tweakable as the standard ones.

The standard four pots are quite good with better pads, fluid and discs.

If all else fails buy a JDM MY 99/00 WRX/STi with 280bhp as standard with better internals, turbo and more toys like what I did :norty:

Does that not depend on the gearbox? I've read (not experienced!) that the later gearboxes in MY99/00's are strong enough to cope with 300-330lb/ft.

The Trooper 1815 06 May 2010 12:08 PM

Not sure on the UK Cars but the JDM V6's (MY00) had uprated clutches fitted.

The MY 99/00 UK cars got the Phase 2 engine and had a stiffer gearbox casing but apart from some cosmetics and stiffer dampers not much else, except 7 bhp and no change in torque of 214ib ft.

i think that prob holds the world record for higest ftlb figure on a td04 lol

tbh i think you'll find the graph is a bit overoptimistic, im assume it was done when it was mapped by bob?

TD04's tend to average around 260/260, but it varies from car to car. But tbh anything over 260 is a bonus.

gearbox will be fine at 280 unless you don't treat it well, at about 350 they are at the limit of what the standard box can cope with, but if you launch the car hard then you can break the box with standard power.

rickbartlett 07 May 2010 07:21 AM

so it probly makes more sense for me to enjoy it as it is then eventually sell up and get sumat that has more power as standard

The Trooper 1815 07 May 2010 08:59 AM

Go JDM.

rickbartlett 07 May 2010 11:30 AM

whats JDM mate,im new to scoobies lol.been an rs man for years, cosworths rs turbos etc, always fancied a scooby so got one lol
