scoobyboy 27 March 2002 07:33 PM

they look ok what makes you think they are on wrong?

ricco 27 March 2002 07:35 PM

I guess if anything the discs may be on the wrong sides? Can't remember which way the grooves are supposed to point;)

Fat Boy 27 March 2002 07:47 PM

Chris

They're correct. The grooves point towards the back of the car, if that makes sense!! That is the inside edge of th egroove will pass through the caliper before the outside edge. See the AP Racing site - has a page on the "handing of discs". See you on Sat

Mellow Yellow ! 27 March 2002 07:47 PM

The cooling vains (in the centre) I'm sure should be running the other way.... as in a catherine wheel effect dissapating the heat from centre outwards.....not the grooves on the disc.... ( although they'll be wrong as well :( )

Confusing eh !

Mmmmmmmmmm.....edited to say that if you see the pic on AP's site under "handing"....then I'm pretty certain mine are on wrong....as I say...it's not the groove on the disc but the cooling veins in the centre....ahmmmm...

Cosie Convert 27 March 2002 07:48 PM

Yep Wrong way mate !

You will be getting very little cooling as the internal curved vanes will try to draw air in from the outer diameter instead of faning it out.

The confusion arises because most discs have the surface grooves the way yours are. AP's are different.

This may explain why your alloy bells look like they have been well overheated

Thanks C.C.... just as expected, I've just spoken to John Felstead who's also going to cast his knowledgeble eye over the pics...These have only been on since last Thursday...however, I was at Cadwell on Friday...lets hope no damage has been done :(

Thanks

Chris

RON 27 March 2002 07:55 PM

Mellow,
I think you'll find they're right, I'm sure the veins in the discs scoop air in, not throw it out!
I guess it could be worth asking someone like Mike Tuckwood from scoobymania, he'd know the definitive answer for sure.

Definaltey (odd spelling) on the wrong way round! Take a look at the AP site :-

http://www.apracing.com/roadcar/brakekit/identification.htm

shows that they are wrong:(

AndyMc 27 March 2002 08:04 PM

The discs are definately on the wrong side.

It is the direction of the curved vanes that govern how the discs are fitted and yours need to be the otherway round.

Chris I have just found a pic of your brakes which show your old discs were fitted the otherway.I will email it to you

Andy

Oh well, Looks like I was wrong then, never mind.
Ron

johnfelstead 27 March 2002 08:33 PM

wrong way round chris.

the centre cooling viens act as a centrifuge and force air from the inside outwards.

AP Racing disks also have the grove on the disk surface with the leading part of the grove on the outside and the dust/gas is forced inwards as the groove passes through the pad.

Most manufacturers do it the other way round. I think AP do it this way as you get better taper wear charicteristics on the pads this way.

Dave T-S 27 March 2002 09:05 PM

Also confirm they are wrong - just looked at the installation diagram that came with mine.

Mellow Yellow ! 27 March 2002 09:53 PM

Many thanks for your valued replies....just goes to show we can easily get it wrong eh !!!

It'll be sorted tomorrow....thanks once again :)

Chris

Mellow, they're wrong. As you sit in the car, you should be able to look 'into' the aperture of the vanes, not see the back of them.

Cheers,

Richard.

Hi all,
I've collected some more information on AP pads and discs.
Have fun,

I'll just go and boil my head then.

Yours horribly confused

John

PS at last a good point for my much derided Alcons. At least if you fitted these ar5e backwards you wouldn't be able to get out of the garage as your wheeltrack would now be about a foot wider than normal. :D

Mike Tuckwood 28 March 2002 01:01 PM

Oops, right at the end, yes Chris, not on "backwards" but they are on the wrong sides.

Mike.

CraigH 28 March 2002 04:56 PM

Isn't it amazing Chris.

I fax down the correct fitment details off the AP website and they still stick 'em on the wrong way

Who said Muppets? :D

Mellow Yellow ! 28 March 2002 08:50 PM

Yep Craig....in fairness though we couldn't decipher the faxed copy due to their machine not producing a good copy....anyway...all fixed now....and looking forward to Bedford with brakes :D:D:D

See you there Craig :)
