Golf GTI Mk5 - new car
 

Picked up my GTI yesterday and delighted with it.

It's a MY05 with 31k miles, black, sat-nav, 6-cd changer, auto wipers, auto headlights, auto dimming side mirror and rear mirror. multi-function steering wheel, heated seats, folding door mirrors, puddle lights, phone preperation kit and electric sunroof. Car is spotless inside and the bodywork is unmarked. Cost £11.1k and was serviced 5k miles ago including the cam-belt change (full main dealer service record). Just waiting on getting my private plate transferred over.

Very pleasantly surprised with how fast the car feels and the exhaust note is lovely. I've come from a 310bhp Impreza and the Golf actually feels faster a lot of the time as you don't have to wait for the spool up and it's nice having so many toys.

The sports seats are really tight with the side bolsters. I'm a big guy, 6'4" but 'only' 14st 3lbs and it's certainly snug!

Oh, also meant to say in the first post that the gearbox is superb.

The *only* downside is that modding aint as cheap as the Subaru :(

I will secretly admit to enjoying ours over a long trip today which involved lots of twisty A-road for sustained periods. Off the motorway the jiggly ride was replaced by a chassis that was communicative, compliant enough and with enough power to overtake if you worked it hard. All whilst averaging 36-37mpg. And only one mile of traffic jam where the aircon blew warm, going for its nearly four year old MOT tomorrow and quote for fixing the radiator fans. Might keep it a while yet depending on the outcome, but would still like to know if there is a solution to stop the inlet valves coking up which would make it worth getting it cleaned up.

The ride is pretty firm - but I'm currently just enjoying going over the bumps and pot holes without any rattling! My previous wagon really was a noisy beast.

Richard (or any other Mk V Golf owner), can you do me a favour to check your fan operation.

Please can you put your engine on and put your Aircon to "LO" (with the Eco light OFF) and tell me if before the engine is up to temperature or when it is not particularly hot that the radiator fans are running?

The dealer cannot find a fault code and says there is nothing wrong but the Aircon is blowing warm unless there is significant vehicle speed or the car has been left idling so long that the cooling fans have come on at high speed.

When it was in for MOT they checked it but by then I reckon they'd had it idling long enough for the MOT that the high speed fans would be on.

I do not believe that the fan speed is measured (hence no fault code) and that a resistor has burnt out.

I understand that a low speed fan is supposed to come on for the aircon or for cooling the engine, and the high speed fan is not normally required. On ours, we only get the high speed fan after about 15 minutes of high speed idle, then the AC works!

I know it isn't right and I believe I know why but it is difficult to convince the dealer.

Thanks Dan, I'm convinced it should be running, looking into how the Mk 4 fixes translate to Mk 5.

Yep- tried the DSG and whilst the changes were silky smooth and fast I had two main issues - the first was that when in full manual mode, I couldn't tell what gear I was in without looking at the dash display - just wasn't obvious from the engine noise (probably get used to this in time) and the second was that it kicked down too much, i.e. I was in traffic in full auto doing around 40mph (which I believe the DSG has in 6th gear), just very gently squeezed the pedal to stay up with traffic but it kicked down a couple gears and I had to then take my foot off the gas to stop going into the back of the car in front. Tried this a few times at different speeds and the kick-down and lack of true throttle/speed control would annoy me very quickly. Also when pulling away at junctions the front wheels spun a couple times, which wasn't great. Shame though as using the paddles when pushing on round corners is wonderful.

Standard 17's - not that keen on the 18's and they are supposed to ruin the ride somewhat.

Ok, switched the car on, engine stone cold, Aircon to 'LO' (Eco light off) and both the radiator fans started straight away - switched the aircon off and both fans stopped.

I really do like it when people choose practical/proper wheels. I also have "mere" 17s and chose them over 18s (or even 19s) much to the amazement of the crowd of M Sport and S-Liners who feel they need massive wheels on their 2.0 litre diesels...:thumb:

If I can find the fan control module I'm going to try to mount an external resistor/heatsink or a PWM module.

Funnily enough the only Mk5 I've seen which suited 18s is John's - didn't look that garish with the graphic blue paintwork.

Unless it's a 335i then 19 M Sports are a must. :thumb: Cracking wheels them.

Seems like the fan control on the MkV is a little CAN bus module inside the fan. So time to replace the fans I think.

What kind of nut jobs put CAN bus modules in areas that get hot, wet and vibrate :rolleyes:
