how to get that classic subaru exhaust sound?
 
ok i got a 1997 impreza non turbo 2.0ltr, completley standard, what i would like to know is how do i get that lovely suabru exhaust sound?
and please now silly replys....lol

Just put a performance exhaust on it mate.

Then the sound is all yours :)

Apologies, I just read the "non turbo" bit.

You would need to fabricate an un-equal exhaust manifold to get that sound.

Sure,

The picture below shows an equal length manifold, typically found on a non-turbo Impreza (although some turbo Impreza's do have an equal length manifold)

Note that the pipes that come from each cylinder are roughly the same size hence the "equal" bit. This makes the Subaru exhaust note sound normal.

This picture is an unequal length manifold, typically found on a turbo Impreza.

The pipe coming from the left cylinder is considerably smaller than the one coming from the right. This creates the Subaru sound we all know and love.

Your issue is that an up-pipe connects to the unequal length manifold which then comnnects to a turbo. You will need to fabricate a pipe which just connects to your exhaust middle section.

I'm not sure if stainless steel non turbo "unequal" manifolds are available to buy, someone else might be able to answer that.
