What are the pro's and con's with each type?

scoobysteve2286 30 April 2010 01:29 AM

what's the most common tho?

TonyBurns 30 April 2010 07:04 AM

Dont become obsessed with the different types of blocks, there is no need to be, most will quite happily run 500bhp, most people will never run 500bhp.
Closed decks were used on the early classics, most have holes in them now :lol1: as its not the block you need to worry about, then the 2.2 cdb for the 22B, all the rest of the classics were open deck blocks.
New age STI's have semi closed deck blocks, new age WRX's have open deck.

Most common? probably open deck.

Tony:)

Excuse my complete ignorance, sorry!

It's about the amount of material around the top face of the bore, and hence the stiffness of the block. Tony is quite right. We have never seen an Impreza that suffered a block failure apart from those with rods who decided to pop out for a look around!

My V4 has original engine, which is semi closed deck

Nope, its open deck, no classic had a semi closed deck block, only new age STI's which is when they were first introduced ;)

Tony:)

danwrx1980 30 April 2010 04:55 PM

My apologies, my mechanic (who is quite well informed usually) reckons it semi closed, and since he's seen the inside whereas I have not, I didn't see any reason to disbelieve him.

Not in any way saying I disagree Tony, but would the fact mine is an RA V Limited make any difference? I know the V Limited had things the non limited didn't, such as quick rack and helical front diff.

Cheers,

Dan

Nope what Tony say's is right, V1-2 were closed deck, V3 to the start of the newages were open, however whats not to say the SCDB has not been fitted at a later point?

TonyBurns 30 April 2010 05:14 PM

Dan, didnt make any difference on the classic v3/4/5/6 cars, they all shared the same engines (version for version, ie the sti ra had the same as the sti and sti type R)
As Dunk said, unless its been fitted later, it will be an open deck block.

Tony:)

danwrx1980 30 April 2010 05:19 PM

Ok mate, cheers for that. He's in for a bollocking when I see him then ;-)

stuart69 30 April 2010 06:38 PM

But still not a 100% definate way to identify a CDB, the only real way to positively identify a CDB is hatching marks above the oil modine ;)

rossyboy 02 May 2010 01:57 PM

front of the engine behind the cam cover. So you cant see it unless you take it off.

L55 REP 02 May 2010 02:11 PM

i just bought a sti v2 with (so im told as ive not seen it yet) a snapped off cam shaft pully, the garage that the guy has taken it to has said that the engine is toast and all the valves would be bent etc.
is this true? he said the car just died on him at 30mph and now it wont turn over.

im guessing as its a v2 that it will have a closed deck so what your saying is as long as theres no con rod out the side of it that its worth rebuilding ???
or cheaper/easyer to replace with another engine.???

Here are some photos that I took while running around API...

Open Deck (this is actually my old STi 5 block which I'm thinking of making into a coffee table and the crank into a table lamp!!)

Look for hatching marks on the block. Common areas are under the alternator and just infront of the starter motor.

jason62 23 June 2015 12:46 PM

Thanks I did see that in previous posts, I meant more with any problems other than what you would normally look for.
