Unusual noise ?!
 

Hi Everyone,

I've had my horrible loud exhaust removed and this one fitted:

I've got 3" right from the turbo all the way to the back box.

The car sounds lovely now, nice and pleasant on the ears and the performance has gone right up now the cat has gone.

Now I have a peculiar noise, usually under acceleration and it goes something like this: "wooooooooooooooooop" :Whatever_

I don't think it did it with the old exhaust but it was that loud I probably wouldn't have heard it! I can keep the noise going by holding the revs and as soon as i dip the clutch it's gone... so this would rule out wheel bearing or anything mechanical?!

Any thoughts?

Is it more of a whine wooooop or more of an engine woooop?

If its a white woop, it will probably be your gearbox (which would be why it goes away when you dip the clutch)

I'm pretty sure it's not gearbox, it's from the back I think and it's quite a bassy wooop!

Its either your gearbox or rear diff
Is it coming from front or rear of car?
If its coming from the rear its the read diff
If its coming from the front its the gearbox

Seems to be from the rear but it isn't a whine at all, it's a deep wooop sort of noise that I've noticed occurs at about 3000 RPM in pretty much any gear and once past the 3k mark, it goes!
Dipping the clutch or slightly easing off the accelerator stops it. Yet if I hold it around 3000 RPM I can hold the noise.
This is why I think it's some sort of air movement noise in the rear of the exhaust or something, it doesn't seem mechanical and I'm 99% sure it wasn't there before the new exhaust went on...

Does the noise stop if you let off the throttle, and come back once throttle is back on??
If it does, id say your mating faces of the pinion and crown wheel are worn.

Yes, it does go then come back.
So I'll be needing a new diff then I presume?

This morning, I started the car up and it ran for 10 mins before I got in and drove to work.

Interestingly enough, the noise was not there at all for the first 1.5 miles. After that, back to normal....

I really don't think it was there before the new exhaust though?! Coincidence?

Could it be that when you had new exhaust put on you went out on a "spirited drive" and it was the final straw for your Diff?

Iv had enough unfortunate coincidences myself to know that it definately happens ha ha!

The car has only done 63,000 miles.... !

Sounds like a possabillity, you got a local tuner near you that can have a look at it for you?

I'll change the diff oil at the weekend and see if the noise changes at all. That might give me a clue?

Is a diff recon expensive?

Sounds like a good start, as for cost i honestly wouldnt know? might be cheaper to buy a used replacement for someone who is breaking?

i im correct it is a Nissan R180 diff? try searching ebay for one.
