Got a Passat Estate (2001, 130bhp PD TDi). Got a big boot and plenty of room in it but around here (small, country roads in Cornwall) it'll average about 40mpg (same, or just a bit better, than town driving). On a run (at 80ish on the m'way) it'll do top 40s .....

Passat TDI 130

Big boot and i've had 50+ mpg on a run easily, 40+ around town.

I got a focus c max tdi
good room and average 40mpg with the misses driving
picked it up from auction for £3600 on a 54 plate book around the £4200 mark
good allround car

Our 2.0 TDi PD140 Octavia gets 53+mpg (trip computer) all day every day with me driving. The missuse usually manages 43-47  The boot's huge, and you can get an estate too.

You could also look at Skoda Octavias. Depends how you feel about 5 seats really though as it's based on the Golf 4 floorpan, ISTR.
