Part 2 is not as interesting. But they are looking more towards JDM Specs but the yen rate is a killer.

I rem Ali on here saying even with forged pistons a **** map will blow anything.

we have 2 factors here Map and Pistons, correct piston, map still crap, piston Pops under heat.

correct Map, piston forged or not will survive, Forged obviously better.

or do we all think that there is a deeper issue.

maybe people Like Alan or other engine guys can answer it. I know they said they thought it was Pistons, But look at it this way, a piston is Visible damage thus instanly you point the finger

but there are reasons a Piston can blow other than wank material, maybe that was or is the root cause ?

Can anybody voice that the remap done in 2009 only changed the limiter ? or did some other numbers change ?

also in the older Scoobs were they forged or have they always done chocolate ?

We see it like this.
In an attempt to make the Hatch a more "modern" contender in the New Green Era, Subaru have aggressively gone for a particular strategy with the ECU. This is combined with a generally higher CR than previous offerings.
The piston choice is based on a number of factors, including longevity (!) and nicely quiet warm up characteristics.
The problem is, it doesn't add up properly. Ying has been usurped by Yang.
Fitting a stronger piston appears to fix the land breakage issue.
We prefer to tackle it from several angles. Forged Pistons of course, but with a lower CR, and tackling the worst aspects of the Samurai mapping.
The result appears to be a reliable, faster and better car.
Less Green but who gives a ....

Yes I think you've got it - a mixture of poor mapping (crazy timing and afr ratios), with inferior piston material has blighted these engines...

I do hope yours lasts, as its a pretty crap thing when it happens... I mean they 'may' offer to rebuild it exactly the same as before... and that changes nothing.

Careful driving will help, but a remap by a professional mapper will hopefully ensure longevity at the sake of losing the warranty...

What a shtie decision to have to face with a new car.

All the best

PS. they're are 'far more knowledgable' opinions than mine on here - save up for a trip to devon and you wont go far wrong. With a very, very, safe 365/430 I am loving my car, but the £ x costing was unwanted - unexpected - & unbloody fair... I'm still paying it off.

codie247 07 January 2011 09:01 AM

We shouldn't have to nurse a performance car. The performance we pay for should be usable IMO. Pity really, because I really like the hatch.

The fix.
Or at least part one.

The UK ones are actually manufactured over here.
I've no doubt they are hand rolled on the thighs of the fantasy female of your choice.
Or male..

very sad but they really are a thing of beauty. That is,, the picture on the left:lol1:
My motor is the 2008 eurospec with an added prodrive backbox. Spirited driving, its ticked all the boxes for piston failure (even ran it on standard unleaded for most of the time). I had the reflash early on and it felt like it lost 20 hp. Since had a Bob Rawle custom remap which transformed it. Hope it doesnt go pop, but for sure will be fitting a set of them if it starts to show the slightest of signs.

joz8968 10 January 2011 10:33 PM

Yeah, it's funny/sad (delete as app.) how us petrolhead types get all gooey about precision engineered parts... Which, ultimately, you don't get to see in operation! :Suspiciou :cuckoo:  :lol1: It's a "man thing" - all to do with 'gadgetry' on a grand scale.

Girls don't get it LOL! :nono: :lol1:

Disks look ok

Sanderfrus 28 February 2011 02:14 PM

Hey !

One more gone !

2007 STI sedan PPP, two pistons are dead and turbo has wastegate crack. Mileage is only 45 000km. Going with wiseco pistons, new VF48 turbo and remap, hope it helps because it costs aloooot.

We'll the bad weather did do something odd to my brakes
They're nearly back to normal now, but grind a lot after rain or washing.

think mines been had by dreaded ring failure !

enginge light & few other warning light came on sat, took to dealer y,day code p0024 came up & oil was off dip stick all points to ring failure

so waiting to hear from garage with report on it in nx couple of days

Littleted 15 March 2011 09:41 AM

Sparkey whats Garage said about your

Engine/Drivetrain Modifications: revolution exhaust system

U know what IM are like change a sticker and they wont support you.

sparkey67 15 March 2011 10:00 AM

its in hand

no engine or drive mods on car

just waiting for report , once its sorted thinking its time for remap by ANDY :-)

Littleted 15 March 2011 10:11 AM

im saving for Alan to make mine 450 but need to ride it for a while. Gonna get pistons changed to cossi or something like have engine forged etc.

Just watching fuel prices at the moment, if there isnt a revolt in the next 9 months im gonna think about looking at something else. Not that Fuels an Issue i just hate filling their pockets.

sparkey67 15 March 2011 10:19 AM

the way iam looking at fuel prices is doesnt matter what car ur driveing we r getting screwed big style !!

doesnt matter what u put in std fuel or v,power , if u r getting shafted u mite as well enjoy it as long as u can afford it

there mite well b forged pistions going in when it gets rebuild , watch this space

Littleted 15 March 2011 10:38 AM

i would get Alan to send you some cossi ones they look lovely

salsa-king 15 March 2011 11:33 AM

do engine warning lights come on when you get a problem with the piston?

Yes but when it's too late i suspect :(

salsa-king 15 March 2011 11:42 AM

^^^^
I've one year warranty left (Jan 2012) then + 2 yrs extended with Subaru as well taking it till 2014.

Only got 16400 miles on the clock....

keeping fingers crossed I'm ok.. hence why not doing anything to the car.. just in case!

Just keep filling up with Tesco 99. Dont think you will have any problems then. Just a guess, but i think there are lots of garages out there putting ordinary unleaded through their super unleaded pumps and pocketing the 8p a litre. Cant see a major supermarket doing it.

this scares me a bit cos how can we tell, surely if your found to have 95 in on engine failure how do u prove it.

I know a guy on here Rob i think, had this.

Easist way use 95 and addative But i know ballache :P

salsa-king 15 March 2011 02:55 PM

since having the car its had

2x £40 SHELL SUL
3x £40 TESCO SUL

ranging between 132p-134p a litre.

sparkey67 15 March 2011 03:56 PM

i think its to late when lights come on damage already done ! uv just got to keep checking oil etc & if not boosting or hesitating r ment to be warning signs

mines been ran on v,power since i got & not hammered just daliy drive & a bit play now & then

juggers 17 March 2011 10:14 PM

Cosworth forged pistons won't solve the issue even the STI cosworth press car went pop and thats full of cosworth bits ;)

The 2.5l engine has an inherant issues which is one of the reasons why Litcho has stopped with the type 25.
