Thanks bud :thumb:

I had Simon come down to map the car yesterday :luxhello: she is now tax'd insured and mot'd and on the road, iv done a write up of yesterday's events :thumb:

Thanks chaps

Ok iv had a chance to do a "small" lol write up of yesterdays events

So Thursday night arrives and I find myself struggling to sleep, half of it due to being like an excited kid at Xmas and the other half full of worry that something may go wrong, anyways I'm up at 6am Friday morning and out cleaning the car and getting little bits tidied up.
Simon gets to mine at about 1020 and finds me spraying cotton fresh freebreeze in the car lol, it smelt a bit foisty as sat there for so long .
Simon starts fitting the syvecs while I suddenly realise iv not gotten petrol, doh, so I send of my youngest brother for a few jerry cans of V power.
Petrol in the tank syvecs fitted Simon starts running through the checks, no map sensor signal!!! Crap, we check the wiring, looks ok at first but on closer inspection it seems iv wired it wrong, soldered wrong wires together! Ok, cut, join and resolder, done, check for map signal, still nothing, Simon them fits a simtec he has in the car and still no map signal so we fit a known working map sensor, check the ecu again, no signal! Crap again, we check the wiring and it seems the prat who'd connected up the map sensor wrongly had only cut it and reconnected it the same incorrect way lol, face palm, cut again and reconnect, we have a map signal, everything else checks out so we fire her up.

Upon firing we notice it's only running on two cylinders! Simon checks the injectors and spark plugs by getting the syvecs to fire each one individually, all seems to be ok, we are both stumped, we think it could be a timing issue as the injects are working as are the spark plugs, fuel is getting to the injectors and its one side of the engine that's not firing. We pull of the cam covers and check the timing, all looks ok, we then start to think the worst, damaged valve gear maybe?, I go to get a compression tester from a friend, with the most horrible sick feeling in my gut and fearing the worst we hook up the compression tester, it's fine good readings from both cylinders, so wtf is going on, Simon checks the plugs they are covered in crap, I clean up the plugs refit them we turn it over and it jumps into life firing on all 4.........no way I could of cried lol, by this time iv already phoned the mot centre and apologised saying I wasn't going to make it.
We decide for a few minutes what to do next, I asked Simon if he would mind putting a base map on and we run it for an mot and leave it at that as it was getting on a bit, no problem he said, we rushed around like mad men getting things ready and put back together, I phone she mot centre and my mate said yep bring it down soon as possible, so off we set for the mot, it passes, shoot to the post office for road tax, Simon then says we need a nice long road to put some boost and fuel into the map, awesome I think lol.

We set of for the duel carriageway, we have some short bursts of throttle then Simon says "ok back off, 2nd gear and full throttle" I say "what, foot to the floor" lol Simon says "erm yes" lol so I floor it, a brief second of lag the I hear the turbo spool then all of a sudden all hell breaks loose, the wastegate opens and the horizon approaches very very quickly "Jesus Christ" I say to Simon he laughes looks at me with a huge grin on his face and says "that was only 0.8bar"!!, we do another run in 3rd, this time it felt quicker, a lot quicker, I ask Simon "ruddy hell what boost was that" again he laughs and says "only 1bar".
We do a few more runs and pull over to check all is still ok, no leaks etc, all is fine no problems.
we head of again and Simon says "we will go to 1.4bar this time" we start of and again Simon is tapping away on the laptop, "ok" he says "back of, into the third gear and full throttle", I do exactly that the next words that came out of my mouth were "HOLY SH*T HOLY SH*T" it pulled a lot more harder and faster than 0.8 bar in 2nd I was totally surprised by the smack of acceleration when we hit full boost, it felt amazing and also scared the crap out of me lol.
We decide to leave things at the holy sh*t boost setting as Simon has called it lol as it was getting late in the day and Simon had a long journey home, we trundle back to mine, I'm shaking with excitement and the grin on my face must have been massive, we had a chat about the next stage I shook Simons hand and thanked him so very much for his help not only on the day but for sourcing me a syvecs second hand, answering my pm's and texts while I'm being a pain in the **** and asking silly questions lol, Simon then heads of home and I head of to pick the mrs up in the car ........now that's a different story lol, let's just say with the straight cut gear set and drop gears, screamer pipe and total lack of sound deadening she says it's to loud, although she asked to go fast, ok, the result was her screaming and waving her arms around in panick, I laughed hysterically which cant of helped things lol, she does not like the car......oh well lol.
I still have a few bits to sort out, we have a misfire at full boost at around 7krpm in 2nd which we think is down to the fouled plugs, iv got to clean them up and see how it goes, I'm also getting totally gassed out by exhaust fumes in the cabin, so much so I now won't drive the car again until I sort the problem, it's bad enough to sting my and any passengers eyes and throat and leave you feeling bad, I'll sort this out asap, the end result was an estimated 430bhp at 1.4bar boost on just V power, I want to take it to 2.1bar using a 20% meth mix so will be very interested to see what figures it makes then and what it feels like lol, anyways I'm over the moon and can't wait to get out in the car again.

I also want to take the opportunity to thank all they guys on here who have taken the time to help, offer with advice etc, I can't tell you how much I apreciate it, thank you all

Iv got a few vid clips of the day my brother took while sitting in the back during mapping, and when I was of to pick the other half up

The "ruddy hell what boost was that" clip, 1bar boost.

A 1.4bar boost run, I backed of as before we came on full boost I knew there was a busy junction comin up, past the junction and the car passing us we done a full throttle run in 2nd but suffered the miss fire at 7krpm.

Thanks for the kind words Jura :thumb:
I'm using pfr7's mate, the fouling was probably down to the leaking injector seal issue I had but will get a new set and swop all 4. The ppg box does sound awesome lol, iv also got straight cut drop gears which are very noisy lol :D

Is that the don't go towards the light re carbon monoxide poisoning lol.
I'm almost there Alyn, got to thank you also for your help with everything bud.

CRonson7 27 August 2012 08:34 AM

Well done mate, sounds awesome, I had similar engine issues when Steve Simpson came to put a base map on my car, only firing on three but just needed a good service and all 4 fired into life

786omar 27 August 2012 09:13 AM

I would upgrade the 7s to racing 8s or denso Ik01's at that level :)

Ste RB5138 27 August 2012 11:19 AM

Good write up, hope to see it up Shakespeare drag strip soon.

Kwik 27 August 2012 12:33 PM

Awesome Worbs! I bet it was all worthwhile wasn't it? i can't wait for that day...

worbs 28 August 2012 12:14 PM

Cheers guys :D was well worth the wait, there are a few things to sort ie a fuel leak that has reared it's ugly head and a couple of other silly little bits but it almost there.
I'll upgrade to the 8's before we start playing with meth and 2bar boost Omar, not going to be using the car a great deal so should be ok.
Will certainly get up to the pod in it when it's done but I think shaky is a bit far, especially with that loud as **** gearbox lol.

worbs 07 February 2013 01:55 PM

Well it's been a long while since Iv updated this so I thought I'd pop one up :)

End of sept last year Simon came down again to do some more mapping, we travelled up to Clive atthow tuning in Norwich to use the dyno up there.
I'd bought myself a drum of methanol ready for the session ;), alas it was not ment to be this time as my crappy coil packs stopped play at anything over 1.3 bar, still the result was 450 something bhp at only 1.2bar so not a bad benchmark.
I sourced a set of new age coil packs a week later and got them fitted.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...663C6B1A35.jpg

After Xmas I was ready for the next mapping session, new age coils fitted and ready to go, I head of to meet Simon in Norwich at the dyno again with my trusty 25l can of methanol.
We get the car strapped down and Simon gets to it, I decided to leave the current setting as cal1 on the syvecs so Simon sets to work building up boost and fuel for my remaining 7 cal settings :). Watching Clive atthow operate my car on the dyno was nerve wracking to say the least seeing it being taken to them rpm levels is a very nail bitting experience, anyways we stop at 492.7bhp @ 1.6bar on V power alone for the time being.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...829D0860AA.jpg

As time is running out we decide to put 10litres of methanol in the tank (20%) and go again, the next run came up at 507bhp at the same boost level
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...82A4669560.jpg
I'm chuffed to bits, Iv hit 500 and I'm thinking that'll do for me :D
Simon taps away on the laptop and another run is performed
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...82AE701F11.jpg
WOW I think, will I hit 550 maybe??
Another run is then done
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...82B54C163C.jpg
Then another.....YES I'd hit 550bhp the smile on my face was huge I was beeming :D
The end result was 558bhp and 444.8lbft
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...6216D094A8.jpg
I was over the moon, we unhooked the car as dyno time had ran out and Clive needed to get to work with another customer.
Simon then set up my cal's on the syvecs and set up the launch comtroll and anti lag via switches I'd installed on the dash.
To say the drive home was amazing was a massive understatement lol, my top cal setting is number 7, I tried cal 6 once on the way home and bricked it lol, I went down to cal 5 the lowest meth map and gently cruised home.
Iv since tried cal 7 and the launch controll and all I can say is amazing! I have never experienced such brutal and full on acceleration, it's scary :) god knows what people like andy f and Clive Fulcher etc must feel in there cars lol.
Iv booked up for the 30-130 event in march and this will be my first real test o the car, I can't wait.
I want to say a huge thanks again to Simon roe (jolly green monster) for the mapping and Clive atthow tuning in Norwich for the dyno use, thanks fellas you have made all my hard work seem worth it :D.

Quick vid of the final dyno run :D

spudboytim 07 February 2013 03:38 PM

Great result.

Feck me, i thought the engine was gonna jump out!! Awesome work m8 and a great result.
I know what you mean about watching a car that you built on the dyno heading toward the redline!! My mrs said i looked ill when we watched mine being mapped!!!:lol1:
Tim.

GazJenno 07 February 2013 07:35 PM

Awesome car. How much is Methanol per litre? And where do you buy it?

Gaz

mickywrx 07 February 2013 08:21 PM

Engine mounts done up, Ian?

Just for you Gaz; http://www.jennychem.com/methanol/80...al-barrel.html

worbs 07 February 2013 09:36 PM

Thanks fella's :D

Not sure what's going on with the mounts Micky, I will have a good check of them when I can get it on a ramp, something is not right there, it shouldn't lift that much.
As Micky has posted gaz I get mine from jennychem.

KAS35RSTI 07 February 2013 09:59 PM

Nice work

mickywrx 08 February 2013 09:22 AM

Be wise to check them when you get a chance. :thumb:

Bet you're pleased you stuck with it, it looks and goes well. :thumb:

jura11 08 February 2013 09:33 PM

Awesome results Ian and must be pretty awesome in classic have 550bhp

Do you planning some track days?

Jura

morrison20 10 February 2013 11:33 AM

Lovely car mate...I'm planing do build my car properly...but just can't imagine the cost of it...I'd say that u must have spent a fortune on it...But from what I see...It was worth it

toneh 10 February 2013 12:07 PM

Love threads like this , down to earth builds with a nice end result
Gives folks plenty of inspiration and shows with time , effort and s bit of cash what can be achieved
Hopefully I'm picking the. Ra up today and if it turns out like this a couple of years down the line I'll be a happy man

Mad Hammer 10 February 2013 12:15 PM

Well done Ian, glad you saw it all through. Stick with that tubby ;)

worbs 10 February 2013 04:34 PM

Thanks chaps, very glad I stuck with it, 550+ in a classic feels awesome :D

Cheers Clive, got to say a big thank you to you as well bud, helping me with bits etc, I'm torn with the turbo chap, not 100% sure what to do, Iv stuck it up for sale to see what happens, if it sells ill let it go and go for something else if not ill just stick with it.
I was hoping to be able to put my name on the totb list as that was my hope for the car, but I can't get anywere to test or prove it :(
Anyways will see you at the 30-130 chap, Iv started stripping weight out of the car already ;)

Mad Hammer 10 February 2013 06:23 PM

IMO Ian that turbo is spooling well and making power, enjoy it rather than chase a few more bhp this season.

Also glad I could help you reach your goals with a few parts etc.

Your right chap, I have hardly driven it as it is, ill keep with it and maybe change next year.

jayallen 10 February 2013 07:20 PM

I love the look of this car!

Thanks chap, it's comments like that that make me feel proud of what I have achieved and makes the blood sweat and tears along the way seem worthwhile.
She's looking a bit tatty now as the paint Job is starting to fade, plus I spilt methanol down the rear quarter when putting it the tank! This stripped the paint!. I will eventually get the body work sorted and a pro paint Job done, in the current colour of course :D

worbs 24 April 2013 10:47 PM

Well suppose its time to bring this to an end :(
As you may have seen the car had to go due to wanting to start a family, the best ever reason for selling in my eyes. It's a shame I couldn't keep it but I needed a decent sized family car a didn't want to drive around in a crapper and have the scoob parked up not being used.
Iv thoroughly enjoyed the journey, the ups the downs and going back I'd do it all again :D
I'd like to say a huge thanks to all on here who have helped me, be it with advice, parts or words and comments of encouragement, it helped in a big way, thank you all :D
Anyways onto pastures new, Iv bought my family sized car now

A 4.2l V8 Audi S4 :D and I love it, compared to driving the impreza it's shear luxury, it has so so many extras, tv's in head rests 6 disc DVD changer in the boot etc etc loads of stuff, and best of all is this mrs will actually get in this one lol.
It's actually surprised me with how quick and nimble it feels for a big estate car, the acceleration is awesome, as soon as you touch the pedal it goes, it'll even do 30mph in 6th quite happily at around 900-1000rpm!!.
Iv had the exhaust fettled as it just wasn't V8'y enough for me in standard form lol but that's as far as the modding will go......well for a good while yet anyways ;)
Quick sound vid for y'all ;)
