WR1 i/c water spray
I've just bought my first scoobie, a nice shiney WR1. can anybody tell me what the intercooler water spray is for and when do I need to use it?:wonder:

Its to spray water on the intercooler to cool it. but to be honest its a bit of a gimmick and doesnt do alot. just forget about it

If your giving it some beans it wont hurt to press it a few times, Its there for a reason. Its meant to keep the air cool before combustion denser air combuusts more (or something like that :D) |

has anyone ever tried modifying the wc spray to fire a liquid nitrogen mix surely that would have an effect on cooling

I dont think it'll make much difference either way because all evapourating liquids have cooling effect but you're only cooling the outside of the intercooler. And, nitrogen is very difficult to handle, an internal water spray would be better

Hello, ok, this video might not be of use to most of you, its about the new GRB Spec-C driven by Toshi Arai. It's all in Japanese, but luckily I know Japanese (and Toshi haha, so have confirmed directly) BUT, he says in the video, that when driving on long SS's the intake temps can soar up to 70 degrees C, but with the water spray, this can be reduced to 40 degrees C, resulting in a power hike of up to 25bhp...

I think the JDM cars have a auto water spray, much better in my opinion. At least it does it when it needs it unlike me when I struggling to find the button when I'm giving the car some :D

Yep JDM's have manual and auto, the auto function is much better :D used most of a tank of water over 200 miles in summer (thats a 12ltr tank of water ;)) so yes it does doe something, the manual one is a bit useless tbh.

Just thinking of a new mod lol what about an internal piped and pumped system with an external cooler so the boost is running round a cold and finned pipe :confused: |
The ecu controls the auto and the uk ones dont have that function, it may be possible with an after market ecu but you wont get it to work the same as a jdm one.

if you was to tap the controller into the rev gauge or an aftermarket tachometre via a swith it wouldnt be that hard for it to come on when giving it beans at all tere is alternative more complex ways in which you could increase spray amount to revs but then you really are going into electronics

Has anyone done any research as to what speeds the spray is effective at actually hitting the mark on the IC?
Or is it just at low speeds it hits he right spot?? |
It doesnt do it on revs, it does it on what the ecu is seeing (temps etc), that facility isnt available on UK cars.
It has been discussed several times though, and no one has a proper solution, except buy a JDM STI ;) Tony:) |
As Tony said is not that easy. Its all done bt sensors and the ecu.

I done it using a boost activated switch and a JDM auto switch.
The only people who say it does nothing are people who either havnt used it or dont monitor intake temps. When activated it only takes a few seconds to drop a couple of degrees, cooler intake temps equals more power! A few extra nozzles help heaps also. The JDM ecu activates when Boost, intake temps & throttle position all reach preset parameters. Here is how I done it...... Parts needed. Boost pressure switch. Boost Pressure Switch - For Turbo Water Injection hobbs:eBay Motors (item 330208763186 end time Sep-22-09 13:39:21 PDT) Can be set to what ever pressure you want it to activate. JDM Auto Spray Switch. I got mine from Grade A Subaru for £11 Silicone pipe (or a T piece if you already have a boost gauge fitted) Male & Female spade connectors, some low gauge wire, scotch locks, insulating tape and cable ties. First thing is to fit the JDM Auto Spray Switch. Simply scotchlock wires from the the rear of the manual switch and fix to Auto switch with female connectors. Ensure the connectors are wrapped in insulating tape so they dont contact and short out. They will be very tight together. Dont conect the new wire that is scotched locked to the Red & White wire(12v) just yet. Attachment 53994 As I already have a boost gauge fitted I didnt need to run a vacum pipe through from the engine bay. I simply fitted a T piece in the vacum line and put the pressure switch in place. Attachment 53995 The switch has three male spade connectors on it, Normally Closed(NC), Normally Open(NO) and common. Tape up the NC connection as its not needed. Take the 12v live that has not been connected to the Auto switch and connect it to common connection on the pressure switch. Then connect a wire between the Normally Open connection to the Auto switch where the red & white wire would go(should be the only connection left). I have taped up all the connections on the pressure switch and its a bit hard to see in this pic. Attachment 53996 Tidy up wiring trim of cable tie ends and put your dash back together and thats about it. Attachment 53997 |
I have mine wired up to an adustable preasure switch, soon as i hit 15psi of boost it starts spraying. Only got the small tank so when i fill up with petrol I also have to fill up with water.

Was thinking of doing this mod to my car, does anyone know of a UK distributer for the Boost pressure switch??
