my son is 8 years old and loves planes,
im sure its a phase but i said to the boss, lets get him a flight sim game, would the microsoft ones be to advanced?, if so, is there a really basic one where he can cut his teeth on either online or a game to buy off ebay,

it was really popular years ago but you dont hear of it now

There's a flightsim built into Google Earth if you know how to find it.

Microsoft Flighsim is no longer in development, but it was so advanced and realistic people were able to log real flight time in it for training purposes, so I'd say it's a bit advanced for a 30 yr old let alone 8 yr old! :)

I'd say Flight Sim would be way to advanced and possibley a bit boring.

Best flying game ever was Independance Day for the PS2. Logged some flight time killin aliens bai!:D

Flight simulator x was good,you can fly all types of planes,from cessna to f-16 fighter jets,and loads of commercial planes and Helicopters too..Only problem was with it is you needed a powerfull computer to run it on full settings,alot of players complained about Glitching and the game crashing,but if you have an up to date pc and a good graphics card you should be able to run it fine on medium to high settings no problem...

Got the older version of Flight Sim here, 2004 I think, yours if he wants it, can pop it round later, will pop in for a brew anyway

Pity you can't get him into Cranebank to have a go on a full training flight sim. The realism including motion is very impressive.

I had the Flight Sim X, was great but I lost the game disk :(

Even had the Force Feedback joystick, it rumbles when you are taking off and you can feel the runway lights and it goes all smooth when you lift off.

I reckon this is for Jackos mate, he is going to convert his bedroom to a 757 cockpit.

Anyone remember Airbus A320 for the Amiga.....

Moving on...

Flown all the FS games, now on FSX and I would say its a case of how far do you want to take it.

Set up a basic joystick and he will be able to fly around quite easily.
I am sure he will shock you how quickly he will learn flaps etc...

Then, its a case of how far do you want to push it. I can fly fairly much to the Nth degree in FSX, but TBH, its rather boring, as if you do it properly via NAV and ARP etc then its just a case of sit back and watch it fly itself.

You will defo need a good spec machine though for FSX. My over clocked Dell will only run at about 15 FPS with everything on max.

To keep good control and smooth GFX you need 30FPS really.

Another one I used to play as a kid was Chuck Yeagers Advanced Flight Trainer... anyone remember that one...
