Confused!?!? Anyone have any ideas???

I recently bought a impreza. The log book says that it is a 22b sti type uk. It also says that the car is a 2ltr hatchback. The car is a hatchback and i have been told that the engine has been rebuilt to version 5. I spoke to somebody from subaru and they said that the 22b is a 2.2ltr engine and is not manufacured as a hatchback. Is there any way to tell what engine I actually have? An HPI Check comes up with 22b STI, The vin matches the plates, but the engine says ej20 and the vin says gf8. shouldnt this say gc8? I am really getting confused! this is my first Subaru and the more im learning the more confused I am. HELP!!!!

engine should be EJ22GDW7PR chssie GC8-070. afaik

The one thing it isn't is a 22B. Rofl at whoever wrote that on the V5. Most of what you need to know is on Scoobypedia etc etc etc so go have a look.

As far as the VIN is concerned, GF8 is the correct designation for a turbo wagon (as the old hatch/estate was known). GC8 refers to the saloon/coupe, unless it's a P1, which is a GM8.

OK, So GF8 Is the right vin for the engine that I think I have. Im pretty sure its an sti v5. the concern now is that the vin and the plates match up with the HPI Check but it states the same as the log book saying that it is a 22b sti. Does the HPI Check go by the log book records? Could the log book have a mistake when the car was imported?

my last v7 sti jdm , had wrx on the logbook,

when they are registered the registering person could of put subaru impreza evo sti 22b p1 RB5 and it would of gone thru as that !

If you didn't pay £20k+ for it then it aint a 22B. As said above, depends what was written on the forms when it was registered, I'm guessing it's an import. Some people even registered WRX's as 2.0 GL so they get the insurance down.
Best thing to do is get the 7 digit applied model code from the VIN plate, should start GF8xxxx. Can easily find out from there.

The biggest concern is if you bought the car as a 22b. Unless you paid big dosh it probably isn't one.

Pictures will confirm this.

My old STi V (jap import) had "Impreza GLS" on the log book  I just got the DVLA to change it ... they altered it to "STi Type UK" :brickwall

? :D

couple of things IF it is a 22b. most easiest things to notice.

wide arch body
red cam covers (very noticeable when the bonnet is up)
ej22 engine
also should be a small plate with 22b then the cars number out of 500?!(i think)

Terminator X 25 March 2010 09:47 PM

I think the price paid would confirm if it's a 22b or not :lol1:

Just post up the full VIN number and we can go from there.

As mentioned above don't believe anything on the V5, my STI RA is down as a 1.8 GL

NOT a 22B, for sure...

22B's were the fastest, of the Fast for the first gen models...ALL OF THEM. one easy way to tell if it has the perks of a 22b.

- Belstine Suspension
- BBS Rally Rims
- A button that says "water spray" or "cooling spray" or something... that sprays water over your intercooler to cool it off for more power
- a huge turbo
- 2.2 liter engine (thus the name "22B")
- and a center diff control (yeah, the 98 to 99 22b sti had that...)
i don't think i left anything out...sti stuff...high performance brakes, 225 45R 17 size tires. special rim displacement...deeper than the other first gen sti. front and back fenders pumped out more than the other sti...thus the deeper displacement.
