Help for a M8 - MAF DEAD??????
 

My M8 has just called me and his car will turn over, fire then Die. If he unplugs the maf the car will start and idle (all be it lumpy).
Seems to me like the maf has given up??
Havnt had a chance to check the fault codes yet.
When he bought the car it had a K&N filter already on it - which is open to the elements under the bonnet vent (Not a good idea I would say) - Is it poss that the MAF has just got wet with this ****ty weather or....???

Also - what type of MAF will he need to replace the current one?

Sounds eminently possible, but if the MAF had gone completely (or was seriously degraded) you would expect a fairly stable idle if the engine was started with it unplugged.

As such, balance of probability is that the airflow meter's jiggered, but from your description of the "lumpy" idle without it it's also possible that there's another problem waiting to be revealed. Hopefully it won't prove to be engine damage secondary to lean running caused by the induction kit.

Let us know what, if any, it turns up.

This is a recipe for looming upset. Induction kits of any sort are a pest on a 99-00, for two separate reasons, and don't deliver any appreciable benefit over the standard bits until you're nudging 400bhp. The first downer is that they have a habit of exposing the sensor to vibration damage and the second is that without a remap, the mixture can get thrown out of whack even without any damage.

I'm not surprised. Replacement airflow meter is part number 22794AA010 from his nearest main stealer or possibly cheaper from Import Car Parts. He would also be very strongly advised to junk the induction kit and fit a standard airbox and resonator system along with a good panel filter. The only exception to that advice would be if he knows the car has been remapped with the cone in place.

It is the MAF.
Passed on the airbox suggestions - he doesnt know if it was mapped.
Now looking for a maf - have given him J at scoobybits number and usual places to check.
Really bad luck has rained on him since getting a scooby - just hope he keeps plugging away and doesnt give in.
