FMIC - Any good

Hi

Do FMIC really make a difference to power.

What are the differences between the kits for v1-v4 an v5-v6

Are the ebay ones any goo or should i stay clear, and which ones are worthwhile?

cheers

Simple answer.

Depends on the application and quality of the FMIC.

The primary reason for putting in a FMIC isn't to increase power per se but to support other mods (e.g. larger turbo) that produce more power but in doing so create heat, which needs to be dissipated.

New age cars can be upgraded very easily to a STi TMIC which is good to about 400bhp + (although research suggest still not as effective as an FMIC ref: Harvey)

Classics involve a lot of faffing around to get the TMIC from new age STis to fit, by the time you've done this you may as well have got a quality FMIC like the Hybrid.

When mapped (and mapping post FMIC is critical) the front mount usually gets you more ignition advance for a given set of mods (5 degrees in my case) which does result in a power hike circa (5% IIRC)

Whether a FMIC is recommended is dependent on your model/year and goals.

BlackV3STI 22 March 2010 04:36 PM

its going on a version 5 sti, one of the main reasons i am enquiring is because my v3 intercooler wont fit so i have just thought i would go for a front mounted to stop all the messing about.

As the car is now decated with larger injectors a aftermarket ecu is on the cadrs anyway so would it be wise or would you say i should get the new age tmic?

Ill have a look through the link now

cheers

V5 is fairly straightforward fit for a STi8 TMIC.

I've got one on mine at 340/340. Depends on your goals.

If going for Hybrid, FMIC is the one to go for.

STi 8 TMIC is easier to fit than a FMIC kit on your model. What is best for you depends on what power goals you have now and for the future, along with planned use.

As they are so much bigger than your existing one, they can require some banging of the bulkhead to fit. I never got around to going the whole hog with a undertray and scoop, but just used some sealing foam, as others have done.

For track work, high speed runs and big bhp, Hybrid FMIC is better. You do lose a little bit of throttle response due to the increase in pipework length, whether you notice it or not is another matter. Some do, some don't.

The STi8 one has always served me well on the road and strip.

Bob

As you seem to be in the know ill ask you a direct question.

Just been on your website and the Hybrid looks like a good bit of kit but as a power figure of what i want from my car, as standar it was 280 hp and tbh in terms of where i want to end on power figures im looking at circa 320 BHP , would you say i should go for the FMIC or Sti8 TMIC

Cheers mate

Aztec Performance Ltd 22 March 2010 06:28 PM

For that target and your model, STi8 :thumb:

P600wrx 22 March 2010 07:22 PM

i have fitted a version 7 tmic, after some welding work to move the dv port i grinded 5mm of the outlet port and same of the throttle body, it bolted up a treat with loads of clearence at the back of the ic, custom mounts so she don't move just waiting for a re-map to see the real benefits, but as it stands the car is quicker with lower boost as the air is colder going into the engine

BlackV3STI 22 March 2010 07:40 PM

so is that a version 7 ic to a version 5 engine?

How long did it take you to do that?

sounds like alot of work, make me wonder whether to get a cheap FMIC off ebay as it sounds easier to fit as long as it doesnt hamper performance ( im not too bothered about gains as long as it doesn make it worst)

Cheers

f4la k 22 March 2010 10:05 PM

Dont be kidded mate, fitting a front mount is a good 7-8 hours if you have the tools and a bit of know how. Contact harvey on here, he knows his stuff. hybrid gt2 £ 290 and £12.50 delivery, He will also fit it for you for about £180. This may sound alot but believe me its well worth it. I fitted my own only because i couldnt get to harvey before my mappin session, but givin the chance i would have paid the £180...

Tidgy 22 March 2010 10:21 PM

o boby,,,,,,,,,,,,, cooy ;)

don't bother with a top mount, switch to front, the only time where it won't see a better result is on a tiny turbo like a td04, which is also the only time you will see lag even if set up properly, from about 300 up you will start to see improved results.

as said above front mounts don't improve performance, they reduce heat which reduces performance. above the engine, where a car generates all its heat, isn;t exactly a good place for it to be trying to loose heat when you take into account the laws of physiscs lol

just123 22 March 2010 11:19 PM

You should have bought it from the No 1 seller in FMIC an that is Harvey on her thats where i got my one, Harvey is a genuine enthusiast and sells high quality stuff and can offer good support as he is a hands on enthusiast,

BlackV3STI 22 March 2010 11:28 PM

yeah i get ya mate but still not got any ideas what fmic i want to get, i dnt want to spend **** loads cz iv seen some for a grand on fleabay but i nt want a piece of **** either cz i have pride in my car lol , its my baby so i'll contact harvey in relation to the fmic i and see what he says, but where is he located?, me and my mate David could fit the fmic tbh as hes a mechanic and he also wors at directline repair centre in manchester so we'll be alright for the tools and stuff,

to be honest i just want to know the walk through on if there are any issues and what exactly needs doing, does th fmic clamp in to place, is at attached to the front bumper?

seddomyster 23 March 2010 12:50 AM

i got a fmic from ebay for 100 quid an does the job well tbh. car made 324bhp with it. pipework can be a pain as some kits need altering to feed around oil filler neck an make sure u have tools to cut the bumper. be precise as u only get 1 chance unles u have a spare or good with super glue lol
