Is this a DIY job or would it be better to save the effort and get a garage to do it? The space seems fairly tight even on the side not restricted by the washer bottle. Any useful tips?

Take the washer bottle out ( 2 screws) for access n/s.
Take air filter assembly out o/s
Use 3/8 drive ratchet, small extension (ish) and appropriate socket.

It's not hard if you have the right gear to do it with(see above).
The first time I changed the plugs it took me about 1 1/2 hours (not being a mechcanic). The second time took me about 30 mins.
It's a bit cramped, now I wouldn't think twice about changing the plugs.

ive just done my93 wrx
the other day took me less than an hour.
the olny problem you might have is the rubber things on the end of the coil packs (pre 96)(i think) sometimes dont come out with the packs and stay on the end of the spark plugs :)
so u may need a pair of surgical long nose plyers if ya following me :)

I did it (for the first time, on MY95) at the weekend. I thought it was going to be trickier than it actually was - is pretty straightforward really. I took the battery and the washer bottle off and the air filter box on the driver's side. Took about two hours all in, but I was cleaning stuff up along the way!. Need 10 & 12mm sockets, something to undo Jubilee clips (8mm socket on mine), and an approx 5" long extension for the plugs (ie extension + 5/8" plug socket making total 5" long).
