Pleasure of Porsche Ownership!

So I finally collected the car today and within a mile of setting off the irritation of ownership started to melt away. And within five miles all thoughts of expense and warranty and whether to go OPC or go Indy just didn't matter.

Whatever we all might think of Porsche, their drivers, dealers, the money - it actually comes down to the car that you drive.

There are few, if any cars, that combine the sublime elements that Porsche do get just so right. Certainly in the GT3.

All the controls are so linear and progressive in their responses. Their weighting, initially a little heavy but just so perfect once you are in full flight.

The feedback through the steering wheel of a GT3 is almost supernatural. A great joy just to hold the wheel lightly in the fingertips and feels every interaction between the steering wheels and the road surface.

The feedback through the seat of the pants, sitting in the huge racing bucket seats, is like running your hand along the road surface (both good and evil you experience it all). You can feel every complexion every change.

One of the finest gearchanges attached to one of the very best, if not the best, normally aspirated engines in the world. A huge powerband from 3,000rpm to 8,000rpm. And a sledgehammer punch above 6,000rpm. And a noise that is as addictive and thrilling as that first shot of cocaine.

A chassis that is so steerable and biddable with wheel, throttle or brake.

A car that is a supercar, and yet a car that can drive across Europe at 28mpg, arrive at the 'Ring and potentially put in a sub-8 minute lap (6mpg) and drive home again.

For the moment at least - it is worth everything that I need to put into it.

'kin 'ell Fishy - that monologue is worthy of the feckin' Pulitzer prize!
You obviously haven't driven a turbo yet - whizz, bang, wallop....... :)

When you were driving home where you more excited about the car or the prospect of posting about it?:)

I'll give you a go in the Jimny - you'll be wanting to sell the GT3 immediately.. ;)

Sounds good!

Great engine? Yes.
The best in the world? Probably not.

Lambo V10 & V12, Porsche Carrera GT V10, Audi's 4.2 V8, Ferrari V12 & V8.

All are fantastic N/A engines, but to say pick just one to be "The best in the world" would be almost impossible.

Trout 14 March 2010 12:36 PM

You missed the McLaren F1 engine off the list ;)

PS and the nanny hates Porsches but at least concedes the GT3 sounds better than the Lambo on track :p

Does the GT3 have the front end bob? If so does it manage to keep the tyres on the tarmac in extemis? I tend to find that steering feel disappears when the tyres are not on the tarmac.

Trout 14 March 2010 02:35 PM

It is called character John ;)

It is pretty well tied down at the front compared to 911s of the past!

john banks 14 March 2010 03:05 PM

I'm just playing with you. Glad you're enjoying it again!

Trout 14 March 2010 05:43 PM
