3.3 Ohm resistor plug, fact of fiction?
Dear Forum,
Having swapped to non airbag Sti seats I have finally decided to do something about the Airbag light on the dashboard. I have duly ordered a pack of 3.3 ohm 0.25w resistors to sort this. However I have read far and wide that there is a standard Subaru plug that does this. Believing that an OEM solution would be far better than a resistor and some masking tape I asked my local dealer to source some for me. I was emphatically told that no such part exists. Has anyone ever seen this part, and where did they get it from? Can anyone post a photo of a resistor installed in the socket. I am very nervous about getting it wrong and having a face full of airbag with my morning coffee. |
I also have the same problem,i have tried various resistors but no luck getting the airbag light to go out.I have put a resistor directly in the plug & i got hold of a pair of genuine leads (cut from a pair of airbag seats) then i connected the resistors to the wires & still no joy.I also got told Subaru do the part you mention,i ordered some but on getting them they are the wrong part.

cant you just get the dealer to turn them off on the computer?
|
Not that I am aware of. Most dealers are pretty uncooperative about this. With the problem's Toyota are having at the moment, I cannot see many dealers being willing to tinker with ECU's or other bits.
Every forum I have checked refers to either these mythical resistor plugs, or 3.3 ohm 0.25w resisitors |
the resistors trick the car into thinking something is there. and you can get them turned off at the dealers.
for example. if you need to fit a baby seat in front of car then they need to turn them off on the computer. i know you dont need it for this reason but you get what im saying. they do charge for the service. and may i suggest contacting one of the subaru specialists on here. :thumb: |
Just spoke to both Bell & Covill and Cheam Motors, neither of whom are aware of the resistor plug from Subaru, and both who refuse to get involved with re-programming the car. So fingers crossed for the resistors that are due tomorrow!

Using resistors does work.
One of our members over on SouthEastScoobies has recently done it, heres the link: Air Bag Delete/Mod - South East Scoobies heres a link to a steering wheel removal on a Lancer, same principal as the seat removal. Steering wheel swap, how to keep horn & clear Airbag light - Mitsubishi Lancer Register Forum Its normally getting / using the wrong resistance / resistor that makes it not work. Good luck. |

Got a pal that is a Subaru mechanic, when I wanted a baby seat in the front, I asked if he could turn it off using the Subaru Select Monitor. He said it can't be done. I ended up pulling the airbag fuse. Then, when the littleun was old enought to go in the back, plugged the fuse back in, airbag light went off. Subaru's advice if you want a baby seat in the front, is don't. |
ok so you have tried with subaru. ok. but this is done. bmw charge £350 for this. i have the software at home to do this to all vag vehicle. renault clios. has a swith in passenger door to disable air bags. ford can disable air bags on the system. its common for companies to be able to do it. maybe they just dont know how.

I am going to make a go of the 3.3 ohm resistor method and keep my fingers crossed. They should arrive tomorrow, I will keep you posted.

I used 2.2 ohm 1/4 watt resistors from Maplin, well cheap iirc £2 for 10. Work a treat. Just doubled over the ends of the resistor wire tails and pushed in plug and taped up to stop falling out. Not sure but 3.3 ohm may be wrong (slightly too high) value.

Damn it, just tried the resistors, they arrived in the post, and they don't seem to work. The wires on the resistors do seem very thin, maybe they are not making contact properly? Will get out the soldering iron tonight with some cable, see if I can sort that way?

Not on a Subaru but a mate of mine with a GTI6 changed his wheel,I fitted a 501 bulb in the plug and the airbag light goes out....
might be worth a try...... |
