Quick 4wd diesel?

Getting a bit sick of my 1 series. So my switch from 130 to 123d is out of the window.

Trying to think of something that fits this bill but am struggling for around £15,000.

Either that or a similar petrol variant that gets at least 35mpg?

I've even contemplated going back to a cheap Legnum and using the depreciation cash (that I'd lose on another car) towards the cost of petrol. But £300 a month is just too much to bear.

Can anyone think of something along these lines?

How quick?

Volvo D5 AWD, Audi 3.0TDI and errrmmmm....

2003 03 Reg VOLKSWAGEN Touareg 5.0 V10 TDi Auto Diesel on eBay (end time 13-Mar-10 13:31:41 GMT) ?

Matteeboy 10 March 2010 09:20 AM

35mpg and a V10TDI ain't gonna happen - ever.

Reffro 10 March 2010 11:03 AM

A3 2.0TDI 170hp Quattro would seem the most logical, but its Haldex not Torsen 4wd......

Mind, the new 2.0T 211hp petrol Audi engine is remarkably economical, but is not in the A3, it is in the A4. But maybe out of budget.

Actually just done a search on Autotrader, the A4 2.0T is way over budget, sorry.

Non of the derv 4x4's are quick. I had this problem when I was looking for mine.

0 - 60 is 8 ish seconds, not what I would call quick. I test drove the A3 and whilst nice, didn't seem as sure footed as the new scoob.

So on the techincality of the haldex system the scoob won. So now its getting remapped. Downside is, their relativly rare still, so you be very lucky to get 1 for 15K. Most ex demo's are 18+ and new is 21+

Matteeboy 10 March 2010 12:04 PM

3.0TDI and 4.2TDI AWD Audis are definitely quick.

Just a thought but are any of the Subaru diesels falling into this price bracket yet?

Matteeboy 10 March 2010 12:52 PM

They are slow though.

Playsatan 10 March 2010 01:48 PM

You can pick up a VW Golf 2.0 gt 4motion for around £10k. Not sure if thats quick enough for you though.

bugboy 10 March 2010 02:06 PM

hi there, the golf is the best bet.. pd140 2.0l engine is best as can be tuned easily to produce 200hp and enough trq to spin wheels in 1st 2nd and 3rd.. I pretty sure my gt tdi wont get left behind by my wrx after 60mph.

:) nothing like a bit of black smoke in the morning....

the_boy 10 March 2010 07:01 PM

Yeah I had a look at that V10 this morning, no chance of decent mpg on that thing.

I have previously looked at the A4 Quattro 3.0 TDIi TDV but you're getting one with a few miles for that kind of budget. Plus the spec level is also quite low.

Audi A8 4.2 TDi is one of the best out there but again you're talking way out of the price range.

I'm trying to weigh up the options between purchasing a slightly expensive performance diesel and how much it's going to depreciate year on year against say a rock bottom Legnum that only does 20mpg (sub 6 second sprint) but will only cost me in petrol not depreciation.

I was looking at the Golf GT TDi 170bhp in the trader this morning but it's not 4wd and that's one of the things I miss about my old car..

I picked up a 3.0 TDi A4 for 14K ('06 SLine with every toy imaginable) and Revo remapped it. It's a little rapid, ;) sounds great and will return 50+ mpg on long journeys when you cruise.

I get 40+mpg on the 11 miles to work!

You can get to illegal speeds really quickly and the wall of torque (not much shy of 400 ft/lbs) is just GREAT fun.

When I get it back I'm getting a Milltek exhaust fitted and they sound stunning on the 3.0TDi (vid on youtube for evidence)

Matteeboy 18 March 2010 05:17 PM

But Kieran - haven't you had loads of drivetrain issues?!

Shy of 400lbs/ft - pah. That's for poofs ;-)

They will only obtain 200bhp with a turbo change, the standard turbo gets chewed up much after 180bhp, there isnt much room for anything on the 2ltr tdi engines :(
If you want 200bhp+ but 2wd then its a vauxhall astra ;)

Tony:)

bugboy 18 March 2010 06:20 PM

talk to powerengineering.. pd140 engine has been faultless for me (touch wood) 74000 miles on a 54 plate.. I dont batter it all the time.. and had the remap done soon after end of warrenty..

still not as much fun as a scoob :)

the_boy 18 March 2010 08:20 PM

2006 A4 3.0 TDi S Line for 14k ?

That sounds like a bargain.
How many miles did that have on it?
What sort of drivetrain issues are we talking about?

This is weird, my daily commute is approx 11 miles to work and my name's Kieran too :D

Kieran_Burns 20 March 2010 08:51 AM

My God I have a dual personality! In TWO bodies :D

The problem was with the clutch (basically got a new one fitted... clutch, flywheel and switch all replaced, under warranty)

I got the car from a dealer, it was actually £14,300 with a 2K trade in for my ailing Golf. 63K on the clock in 3 years so the mileage was high hence the price. I figured with getting it through the Audi Approved thingy I would have the cover - thank God I did.

Next job is to get a Milltek fitted

YouTube - Mad Audi A4 B7 3.0 TDI with Milltek exhaust ;)
