Team Japspeed 2010 RWD Drift Subaru WRX
Hi Guys,
Before i get on to the info on the latest project i will give you guys a brief intro on what we get up to at weekends throughout the season. We run a 5 car team of drift cars in both the British Drift Championship (BDC) and the Irish Prodrift series; we mainly use Nissans for big power and RWD as thats you need to keep these cars sideways of speeds of 100mph. As we use very sticky tyres for maximum amount of grip and this is done with the Maxxis MA-Z1 tyre which has been specially made just for drifting. The 2009 season we came first and second in the BDC and got a total of 14 podiums throughout the year. Steve “baggys” came first, Danny Eyles came second and Shane Lynch came 5th. Below are some pics of the season More details of what we get up to as a team check out www.teamjapspeed.co.uk http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...rojects/PD.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...ojects/pd8.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...ojects/pd1.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...ojects/pd6.jpg The whole team on the podium http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...jects/pd11.jpg The 2 x s15 out for the first time after the builds http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...ojects/pd7.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...gal2009173.jpg The Team In Portugal and Danny doing the rodeo drift http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...portugal13.jpg Enough of the introduction and will get on with the build of the latest project the Subaru :) |
We decided we wanted to have a go at buliding something different and the plan was to build a Hawk Eye Subaru.
Team Mechanic Jamie Morgan was asked if he wanted to build the car and gladly accepted the challenge and it has sure turned out be one of those The project started last October and we spent the first few weeks gathering parts and planning out the build. The car arrived in November and we used a 2001 Bug Eye shell as the basis. First job was to completely strip the shell to a bare minimum and get the full cage welded in and this was done by Peter at Fabricage who did an excellent job and turned the car around in 2 days. http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...0/SDC11730.jpg More pics to follow shortly :thumb: http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...0/DSC_0032.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2470.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2467.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...0/DSC02259.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...udrift2136.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2451.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2452.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2455.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2461.jpg We decided to do something slightly different in the rear so as to give something nice to look at if you opened the rear doors http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2433.jpg |
Once the car was fully stripped and it's sound deading removed and the front wheel arches tubbed to give us maximum room for when we adjust the steering to give the car more steering lock to be able to hold the drift. It was then sent to the body shop to have the inside and the engine bay painted.

The 2 main reasons Subaru's are not used as Drift cars in the UK is that they have minimum steering lock and are 4wd.
We managed to get a Steering rack which will give more than the standard rack and we will have to modify the hubs later to get the maximum we can but for now this is a massive step forward for us to get that all valuable lock. http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2417.jpg http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/w...icture2371.jpg |

Some observations based on some other Subarus..
The rack used by other drift Subarus tends to be the rack from the non turbo cars. You want to do something to increase the castor on that at the front (rotate the topmounts). You can modify the hubs by welding up the tapered hole for the ball joint and redrilling further in board. Ideally though you would want to change the track rod ends and bottom ball joints to correct the bump steer and front roll centre to accomodate the reduced ride height. And don't forget to put some outer CV joints (with guts cut off) in the hubs before the wheel bearings fall apart! |
great project, I like drift sports

looking like a great project, please keep us updated.
