Wheel painting...

Hi all,

I've managed to secure some Comp Mo wheels and will be picking up this weekend.

Anyone any recommendations where I can get them painted? I see JP Polishing get good reviews but their website says that they powdercoat and I was of the understanding that powdercoating can weaken the wheels due to the heat?

Any recommendations or suggestions welcome.

Cheers :thumb:

Outstanding!

When you off down there? Group discount ;)

I just have to check prices and make my damn mind up on colour.:lol1: I have the new tyres to go on, which is a good idea as the liability for getting them on without damage is theirs rather than taking your nice fresh mint rims to a local fitter.;)

I'm not in any rush... Sometime in the next month or so is fine by me...

The Comp Mo are in white. I think I'm going for anthracite again... I would like to swap the tyres over from my Redlines though so may have to pay a little extra for the tyre merry-go-round..

You could always DIY. If you're going to take them to someone professional, might as well have them powdercoated.

Tempting, but I haven't the space or time.

I understand powder coating can weaken the wheels.

RotaUK did post something about compromising strength through powdercoating, I think you would have to go some to compromise the MO's tbh. Ross I'll punt off an email this week to see what could be done for both of us, probably nothing but it shows willing. I actually want 2 sets done so I will mention that too.:lol1:

I just recall a thread about wheel failures, could well be another SN myth.

MO's should be strong enough... I really wanted some Advan but with the £/$ rate and the fact they will cost over £2k, I went with my second favourite.

Cheers muchly for looking into it :thumb:.

2 sets! You are officially a wheel whore ;).

I think that ship has long since sailed :lol1:

I'll forward on any info they reply with, I'll ask about colours as anthracite seems to have varied interpretations. Have a look at the Brands photo thread, Andy Pinseeker did a DIY job with Ford Graphite Grey which is a nice dark 'anthracite'.:)

I've only heard about wheel failure from powdercoating after it has been done multiple times to a forged wheel.

But painting wheels yourself is a very tedious and time consuming process, so if you haven't the time, I wouldn't bother. I painted my stock WRX wheels a silly colour for winter use, and I vowed I would never go about painting wheels again.

It's bad because a part of the strength in a lightweight wheel is the very exact heat treatments that they get in the final part of manufacture, prior to paint.

When powdercoating some places us excessive heat, and it causes a significant weakening of the wheels, and is a common reason for failures on wheels, mainly OEM wheels that people want to tart up, and generally OEM wheels are not that light...

Painting is the way forwards in terms of safety, unless you can be sure the powdercoaters wont overheat the wheels.

:thumb: I will ask about powdercoating too Ross:cool:

If theyre 18 x 8 please let me know if you ever sell em.

Didn't find it tedious when i did mine, did all 4 in satin black in a day although i didn't have to do the insides as they were already a dark colour, one wheel fell over at brands and marked the paint :(

I'm slightly OCD, (self diagnosed,) so I took a little longer than most people. Took me around four hours to prep all the wheels before I even started painting. lol

Ian email me what you want done, colour timeframe, tyres etc and I will include it in my enquiries.:thumb:

They are indeed 18*8 :D. I'll let you know if I decide to sell..

One of my favourites too. Pipped by Advan RS and TE37's but a bit out my price range at the moment.

You fancy getting the Speedlines refurbed as well? How is the build going or shouldn't I ask?

Lol, actually the build hasnt moved physically as such but ive overcome a few issues these last couple of weeks and things are actually moving forward.
Money and enthusiasm has been slim. Id love to get the Speedlines done in a diff colour but i cant spare money to paint wheels for a car im struggling to afford to build the way i want as it is.

It just doesnt make sense im afraid mate.

:thumb: Progress is progress and sounds like things are moving along.

Agree a new wheel colour is bottom of the list when trying to put it back together. Good luck with it...!!
