Spent today at Citizens' Advice and helping my eldest to write letters to creditors after he's still not found work, except for a day or so per week, every other week, and has used up all his savings. Just enough work to keep him off JSA and make it so that his insurance on a loan won't kick in: it needs him unemployed for 15 days, then while he remains unemployed, it pays. But any income, you're fekked:(

To watch him getting increasingly desperate, and unhappy, is a bitter pill to swallow.

There are a wide range of trades in all three arms of the military. Not all require you to be involved in hand to hand combat with the Taleban. How old is he? (not that it matters too much; I joined up at 25)

Yes, we've looked at that. He's 24 at the end of May.

But his cousin just went in, and has put him off with stories of "soldier first, specialist second", and everyone having to go out on patrol against the Taleban.

It may yet come to it, but he's not keen on £16,000 a year to get his legs blown off........and with his luck in life SO far, that's what would be in store for him.:(

He doesnt have to join the Army. You have to have a special kind of mindset to join up at the mo (Army), it isnt the same as 15 years ago, no real threat of death then. Now its training then right in there.
Im in the RAF, and there are trades that cover the whole intelligence spectrum, so if your son is technically minded, then there are techie jobs(qualification specific), or other jobs around the Air Force that will suit. It will give him discipline, security, and a bit of cash, no matter which Arm he decided to go for.

Thanks Ian, I'll forward that to him, he's out at the mo at a mate's for tea, and has another two days' work tomorrow, plus a night shift Friday, merchandising. Keeping his head above water, just.

Remember Jeff, he's got two supportive parents who may not be able to throw ££ at him but will show their damnest support and resiliance. Also, he hasn't a mortgage to pay which helps - you know that from my past situation.

CAB are a very useful body to have on your side (as you'll know) and can really help get creditors off your back mate. They're still helping me and Nat 2 YEARS down the line. :thumb:

Adding to previous... dare I suggest Corus? He's just within the age limit as I was this time last year and I got in. He's skilled at welding, so why not train for something else and have a huge advantage. Monies crap to start with but I know for a fact they are taking 50 apprentices on this year.

Worth a thought even if it's slightly tedious for a qualified welder. :)

if it makes you feel any better, I was only renting with my missus and she's kept the house and laid claim to 99% of the belongings in it, leaving me at the age of 28 homeless and with a PS3 and a bag of clothes! I'm sure I'd be upset if I wasn't so heavily medicated.

What a state of affairs. There really is nothing to help youngsters, is there.
Our future, yet there always seems to be people far less worthy, getting more. Fingers crossed for him :)

Get yourself some advice sooner rather than later, even if it's only CAB to start with. You don't NEED to lose it all.

Has your son thought about sports teaching/coaching at all, is he interested in sport or play anything? with the Olympics a couple of years away there is money being put into sport and grants/training avaliable in a lot of cases.

UK Sport - Leading the UK to sporting excellence if interested this might be the place to start looking into this

I remember 1 of the 7 inductions that they gave was a British Steel induction from 20 years ago on vhs :eek: . The underlying problem up there is that no one will take responsibility which as built up into a culture of backstabbing. I deal with a lot of training up at Corus and believe "if you can't change the man, change the man ":D

Super. Well considering I was out of work and on the bones of my arse for 18 months, I'll take my chances with the only job that came my way. Beggars can't be choosers and I'm grateful I got a second chance at training.
