Engine cutting out

Yesterday. Whilst out driving, the engine cut out on a very busy country road. Wipers/ lights/ radio etc worked, and even though I was coasting to a stop the rev meter read zero. After 15 minutes or so the car would start and run, but the warning sign for the cat (looks like a pan with steam coming off the top) would remain illuminated and after 30 seconds or so the engine just switched off. Seems the longer it was left, the longer it'll run before switching off. Cel did not illuminate. One theory was the coil packs overheating, as there was no spark at the plug when we checked after the car shutting itself down.
Any thoughts on this please.

Cheers
matt.

Anyone???

Looks like the EGT sensor done its job and sensed serious overheating of the cat to me???

Would this then shut the engine down? Is it common for the EGT sensor to be faulty?

I'm not sure if it shuts the engine down TBH.

But obviously you're supposed to act on the light and switch off to let cool for 10mins or so.

Sorry, not much help. :(

Whenn it first cut out there were no warning lights illuminated. These only appeared when I tried to re-start. Car is now with Motoscope in Northallerton. Hopefully they'll sort it quickly and it'll not cost me the earth.
