oil starvation
after 1200 miles of running in with no issues my big end 3 bearing and center thrust bearing decieded to give up.
only difference in my driving was slaloming the car at about 50 mph 8 ish times showing my mate the suspension, as its rock and car is glued to road. (on private works car park) next day bang. must av covers 8 miles, 5 home and 3 nxt day, no baffled sump on a 98 plate wrx import. |
if you did it in rhythm to the oil sloshing from side to side i suppose you would get to the point where there is no oil in the bottom - thats all i can think of

i doubt chucking it from side to side would cause oil starvation, the pick up pipe sits right down near bottom of sump, its possible to push oil up one side out of the way of pick up pipe but you would need to be nailing it round a huge sweeping bend, ie on a track to cause this, oil starvation can be identified by checking all other bearings mains and big end, if its been starved of oil all bearings will show signs of wear

Mine did the same thing at 330 miles after rebuild ,subaru tech could not find out the reason why this happened.Had to have a complete new engine under warranty.

Oil clearance too big/too small on the centre main ??
Oil gallerys on the block halfs/heads or modine not cleaned out properly ?? A close look at the bearings which have failed will normally narrow it down a bit. Mick |
What grade of oil were you using? Too thick, like a 10w-60 or a cold 15w-50 may mean the oil wouldn't get through as quick as it should.

10w/40 semi millers oil, engine was hot,been run for 20mins.

as everything looks damaged to me i would suspect a duffed oil pump :(

lol silly question but did u have oil in the car lol u probably did but just askin anyway ? did u have the rcm pump added yourself , or , were u told that it had an rcm pump on it ? as rcm are high quality i wouldnt suspect it being damaged at that low a mileage unless a foreign object has damaged the pump itsself which rcm will be able 2 confirm ?

yeh there was oil in car, i added pump myself, recommended they are best for a higher reliabilty, id happily send pump off to rcm for them to inspect. still trying to find out why it went bang.

WHO BUILT YOUR ENGINE ? AS THAT MAY ALSO GIVE SOME INFO ABOUT THE DAMAGE IN SOME CASES :)
i have seen damage like this before caused by clearance issues :( being that the bearings used are 0.5mm undersized ( example ) and the crank and rods have never been machined down by 0.5mm in the first place :( |
the above would make the engine solid or near impossible to turn by the crank by hand but a builder with no knowledge would put this down to it being the case of new parts being a tight fit lol , sounds stupid i know but i have seen this happen before with an amatuer builder attemting the work himself lol he made a balls up job lets say lol

i build it, 1st time i bore washed, bottom end was solid, this time, bang, im a mech for vauxhall, all clearances where spot on

and this time, bores are sweet, cant win

any one else got a opinion, or advice when re building.

In my opinion there is a lot of scoring on the white metal on the non failed bearings which is only caused by foriegn material in the oil, (not cleaned properly).
Also if incorrect bearings were fitted it would never turn over if oversize bearings were fitted to a std crank, & if a undersize crank was fitted with std bearings it would struggle to make oil pressure plus it would knock from day one & never make 1200 miles. It does on the main bearings look like oil starvation over a longer period than your car park antics. |
to be quite honest using semi 10-40 imho is the wrong oil 2 use imediately after a rebuild ? and also how many times have u changed the oil ? as after a rebuild there are a few frequent oil changes to be done and the standard 10-40 is not used initially until the engine has been broken in :( im sure sum 1 can confirm the facts or a better idea of oil changes and what oil was to be used directly after a rebuild :)
