Vauxhall omega elite
 
Anyone got any views on the above?

Looking at a work horse and been offered one of these, it's on a 1998 s reg estate 3.0v6 so assume not the best on MPG. Is there anything to look out for with them? Any major issues / concerns etc

look for oil in the coolant bottle, the heat exchangers are prone to leaking located in the centre or the vee and very labour intensive !!
also exhaust manafolds can warp and blow from cold other than that its a great barge

Vauxhall electrics, make sure the check engine lamp is fitted and working when you switch on the ignition.

Sorry mate by this I assume you mean the engine light?

And it should come on when you switch the ignition on and the go out once started?

If there is no light when ignition is on then walk away, or if it stays on walk away?

Yes mate, when you switch the ignition on the light should illuminate, then go out, if it stays lit then there's a problem and if it doesn't light at all then the lamp is blown or has been removed.

PS, I had an Elite Estate with a manual box , very rare, and a superb car, but probably getting a bit leggy these days.

Common fault is water in the rear back passenger side, check that the near side drain hole isnt clogged (they tend to get covered with leaves etc) and the 3ltr's can suffer head gasket problems, but not a bad car overall, dont be bothered what level of spec it is, a good gls/cd will be worth more than a crap elite/mv6

nice one mate, i appreciate that. the only problem is if it does not come on how can you tell if its just a blown lamp or it has been disconnected?

this is an auto mate with full spec at a very good price, its just using my scoob even with a gentle right foot it cost me a fortune in fuel each week running 500bhp and i hate having my german shepard in it she is a long haired dog so the back seats get buggered even with a sheet down so just thought the pomega is a big old boat to load the dog in, and general day stuff.

can i ask mate what MPG were you getting with the barge?

yes it is an estate mate and thanks for the info, where abouts is the plug located so i can make sure its all good.

nothing is 100% and if a clean cd / cdx comes up i will take a look

and its not soo much the mpg in the impreza more the millage and damage it has picked up form using it as a daily driver. think i am getting 180 miles out of a tank at the minute and at a cost of £1.20 its not cheap to fill up. would hope the omega would get a lot more out of a tank and cost less per litre to fill so just a added bonus

Have a look on pistonheads, an 85k 2ltr 16v model gls for 495 quid, in surry, there is one in berks but it could be an 8v and those you need to avoid.
The 2ltr aint bad either, pretty punchy for a big car, easily gets 35+mpg on a run and mid/high 20's in town ;)

Ah thats a saloon, the 8v is really crap, not the best engine they did, the 16v is far better, but the 3ltr is a drinker, quick with 210bhp but fuel efficiency goes out of the window :(

Couple about that may take your interest, not as cheap as the elite though :(

1999 VAUXHALL Omega 2.0i 16v CD

There is a 2.216v 130k on a Y plate estate in autotrader too 31 miles from here but its the 2.2.... do a search on vauxhall 2.2ltr petrol engines and see why lol but it is the facelift version.

Owned a couple, you can pick them up for nothing at auction, your other option I would look at is a mondeo, fab cars and dirt cheap, even the omega is pretty cheap to run tbh, nice bit of rwd fun ;)

I had an Omega Elite Estate as a runaround a couple of years back.. 3.0V6 Auto... think I was managing 15-16mpg average in it and the RWD wasn't any fun at all with the Auto box, if it had been a manual then it could have survived a little longer in my ownership but I got bored of it.

If I could get a decent CD/CDX/Elite Estate with the 2.5TD engine then I'd have another in a heartbeat, but they're like the holy grail of the Omega world and very rare to come across.

I loved the equipment, heated seats front and rear, electric memory seats, dual climate, cd changer, bose, self levelling suspension.. etc etc and the space inside was comical, you could fit two or three of your dogs in there I reckon!! :lol1:

and silly question but what were / are th main differences between the elite / cd / cdx / gls

i assumed the elite was the top end with all the toys but have seen some 2.0lt gls with leathers etc

Elite/mv6/cdx/cd/gls/ls and think there was a bottom of the range one, the 2.2's were direct injection (well the newer ones were) if its not a direct injection then it wont suffer the fuel pump issues the others did (and cutting out :eek: ) otherwise the 2.5ltr BMW turbo diesel is the peach (had one in a saloon ;)) and the 2ltr 16v petrol is more than adiquate for everyday running about ;)

and here is the killer question they revised the car in what looks 2001 which obviously go for a little more money. doe sanyone know if its worth hanging out for a revised version was there that many changes other than looks and xeon lights or is the older version just as good etc

I could get 36mpg cruising the motorway out of both of the 3.0 Omegas I've owned. My 10 mile dual cabbageway (with lots of roundabouts) journey to work saw it down to 24ish in warm weather. Lambda sensors need to be working though. Aside from all the other foibles people have mentioned, the breathers are prone to blocking. Coil packs can fail and are an arse to get at. Cam cover seals fail and fill the plug wells with oil. None of it too bad to sort and they are great cars to drive. Despite all the faults pointed out, I don't think they are any worse than most other cars. Ask me about Mondeos and I culd list just as many common problems.

If you buy an auto give the box a good testing and make sure you have no auto warning signs up. The selector switches can go and cost a few bob to fix. Personally I found little deifference in mpg compared to the 2.2 and the 3.0 compared to the performance gained.

ive got one its really reliable. I get about 20 mpg out of mine. selling it if youre interested £750. 1998 long mot and 5 months tax.

its the cdx ex plod, estate 2.5, it was a commisioners car in the met, so high ish miles at 161k but serviced every 3k, its runs fantastic, I should mention that I have seen better and worst ;) than 20 mpg, but it really does depend on how heavy your right foot is :) its a lot of car for the money.
